Even as a young girl, she was allowed to practice reading with the first graders in Egling.

Today Beate Herold volunteers as a reading sponsor.

The children appreciate that.

Egling – Sitting outside on the stairs with first graders during class and practicing reading with them: Beate Herold had this privilege as a third grader.

Her love of reading continued.

Today the 69-year-old works as a reading sponsor in Egling.

It was precisely those moments outside on the stairs that ultimately led the senior to volunteer.

Even as a student, she was allowed to practice reading with first graders: Today, Beate Herold is a reading sponsor

The Eglingen town hall is now located in the former school building.

During an appointment there, Herold's eyes fell on the stairs to the attic - and she remembered her commitment as a third-grader.

When she told Mayor Hubert Oberhauser about it, he said: “Why don’t you do that anymore today?

As a reading sponsor?”

His suggestion met with open ears from Herold.

“When I retired, I wanted to use my time to do good.” One thing led to another.

A little later, Beate Herold became a reading sponsor.

Three years have passed since then.

Once a week, usually two school hours in a row, she spends time at the Eglingen elementary school.

While reading is regularly on the schedule in “her” class, Deininger is working on the same topic separately with a few protégés.

The reading sponsorship hours are extremely popular.

The boys and girls are fighting to be allowed to read with me.

The texts are read and then worksheets are filled out.

“Sometimes I have two or three children who don’t read as well.

Next time I’ll have five very good readers who are going slow in class.”

There is one thing she finds remarkable about it.

“The reading sponsorship hours are extremely popular,” says the 69-year-old proudly.

“The boys and girls are fighting to be allowed to read with me.” Together with about five other reading sponsors, Herold looks after students from the first to the fourth grade.

“A few more volunteers wouldn’t be bad,” admits the 69-year-old.

“Unfortunately, we lost one or two due to Corona.”

Herold doesn't want to miss the hours with the students.

“They’re just so heartwarming,” she enthuses.

For example, a boy regularly gets up to breakdance while reading.

“Then he comes back to my table and continues reading,” says the reading sponsor and laughs.

In the same way, Deininger is motivated “when everyone is successful all the time and the children read better at the end of the school year.”

Herold was raised strict and conservative by her parents.

It is precisely this consequence that she tries to pass on to “her” boys and girls.

“It works great.” Apart from that, she wants to convey to them the importance of reading.

“I want to make them realize how attractive fantasy is.

What a treasure we have in our heads.”

The senior citizen takes her volunteer work very seriously.

That is also necessary, she emphasizes.

“It is a fixed time that you have to set aside every week as a reading sponsor.

After all, the children are looking forward to it days beforehand.

That’s a certain responsibility.”

Reading sponsors at the Egling primary school: Children really appreciate this

In Egling the children appreciate this.

For Christmas, Herold received a homemade card from a class.

All students had signed.

The letter ended with the words “It’s nice that you exist.”

“I was very touched,” reveals Herold.

She smiles happily.

Although the trained druggist never became a mother herself, she was always surrounded by children.

“They have always enriched my life,” she emphasizes.

Herold's dream job would have been a kindergarten teacher.

Things turned out differently.

But the Deininger woman is firmly convinced that if you want something with all your heart, it will be fulfilled in some way in your life.

Her theory works: At the Eglingen elementary school, Herold's wish at least seems to have come true to some extent.
