There is still a lack of money for the renovation of the Schwabbruck parish church.

An unusual idea could help: The priest bets on a parachute jump.

Schwabbruck - There were, among other things, cracks in the vault, massive rot damage on the roof and defects in the beams - the list of defects was large in the 530-year-old Schwabbruck parish church, which was last renovated in 1974.

The total costs of the renovation, which began last May, were calculated at 1.075 million euros, of which the Diocese of Augsburg bore the lion's share at 783,200 euros.

Further money comes from the municipality, district and district, and own funds are also planned, including 65,000 euros in donations.

The parish council and the church administration were already very active; there were, among other things, charity concerts and coffee and cake sales, and an elaborate “begging tour” was also started at every house.

At least 50,000 euros were raised.

But how should the missing 15,000 euros be obtained?

If 15,000 euros are raised by June, the priest will complete a tandem skydive

Parish council chairwoman Maria Meichelböck finally called the local newspaper to ask whether they could imagine a cooperation to raise the missing money according to the motto “Wetten Dass...?”

The plan: If the 15,000 euros are raised by the beginning of June, Pastor Johannes Huber will make himself available for a special campaign.

When the journalist asked, “How is your priest?”, there was a lot of laughter, including from the priest himself, because the suggestion was really tough: How about if Huber completed a tandem skydive as a bet?

The 63-year-old Huber seemed skeptical at first, but then quickly found out what the requirements were for such a jump - and finally agreed.

And he is not alone: his chaplain Livinus Ngwu also wants to be there.

“Above all, he wants to have photos and send them to his home country, Nigeria.

He says no one else believes him,” says Huber and laughs.

Great prizes in the raffle

For every 10 euros, donors receive a ticket for the raffle.

So anyone who donates 100 euros has ten chances to win.

The money must be transferred to the account DE85 7016 9509 0300 6205 48 at Raiffeisenbank Pfaffenwinkel under the keyword “competition”.

Be sure to include the address required for the lottery box in the intended use.

The main prize is a holiday voucher worth 250 euros at Haus an der Luck in Barbian/South Tyrol.

The second prize is a travel voucher worth 150 euros from “Glück auf-Reisen” in Peiting.

The third prize is a 100 euro voucher from the Gasthaus Schäferwirt in Schwabbruck, the fourth prize is a 50 euro voucher from the Gasthof Frank in Schwabbruck.

Meanwhile, Meichelböck asked around to see who could do the tandem jump with the priest and chaplain, and found the Altenstadt parachutists from “Club 2000” to be open-minded.

“They have a plane on site on June 8th, which is great – because we have our Sacred Heart festival at the same time,” says Meichelböck.

This takes place just outside at the chapel of the same name.

Fundraising campaign in Schwabbruck runs until June 8th

The plan looks like this: The festival begins on Saturday, June 8th at 4 p.m. (alternative date June 22nd) with coffee and cake, which is also intended to be a thank you to all previous donors.

“They are all warmly invited,” says Meichelböck.

Before the open-air service starts at 6 p.m. followed by a cozy get-together, the priest and his chaplain are supposed to arrive at 5 p.m. - if the donation amount has been reached.

In any case, Pastor Huber will draw winners.

The parish council has won four attractive prizes that are intended to offer citizens an additional incentive to donate (see box).

Now the only question that remains is whether the priest and chaplain will come to the festival from the air or by road - that is in the hands of the donors.
