Calanthes are particularly beautiful and fragrant orchid species.
They thrive both outdoors and in pots or containers.
Timeless, elegant, easy to care for – orchids are popular houseplants that usually find a place by the window.
The exotic plants, which originally come from the tropics and subtropics, prefer a bright, sunny location.
But there are also species that you can safely cultivate outside because, on the one hand, they are hardy and, on the other hand, their growth habit makes them ideal for beds and containers.

Calanthe is derived from the Greek
kalos
(meaning “beautiful”).
And this adjective really describes this plant aptly.
With its colorful flowers that appear in the form of panicles in June, the orchid is one of the most attractive of its kind. Most Calanthe orchids grow terrestrially on the forest floor, as
Gardener's Path
reports.
Here are some things to keep in mind when considering the plant:
The Calanthe is also known as the outdoor orchid because it likes to grow on the edge of trees or near water sources.
The pleasantly scented orchid often reaches heights of up to one meter and is therefore perfect for the balcony or terrace.
If you choose a location for the orchid on the balcony or terrace, make sure that the place is partially shaded to shady.
The soil should never dry out with this species.
They like a light fertilizer every now and then.

However, as with almost all orchids, make sure that you use a climbing aid, because the Calanthe can also continue to grow ideally upright.
With a frost hardiness of up to ten degrees below zero, the Calanthe orchid is very robust.
It also has the longest flowering period of all perennial orchids, according to the online portal
Phytesia
.
