After 70 years, the Fick family butcher shop in Erlangen is going out of business.
The decision was not easy for the owners.
One reason in particular was responsible for the closure.

“On Easter Saturday, March 30, 2024, the blinds will come down for the last time at 12 p.m.
In a year or two it would probably have been over anyway,” says 62-year-old owner Peter Fick to the online portal.

The owner's sad conclusion: "You can now earn more with waste"
According to Fick, his children also have no interest in running the store.

Self-employment is always associated with high requirements and a lot of bureaucracy - and then there's the industry: In the food industry, the whole thing is even more extreme.
“I believe that you can now earn more with waste than by producing something yourself,” explains the 62-year-old.

This year the butcher shop would be 70 years old.

And yet: “It wasn’t an easy decision.” His customers in particular regret the closure very much.
As the 62-year-old explains, older people in particular find it difficult to say goodbye to their long-standing butcher shop.
There is no other way: “It hurts my soul,” Fick tells the editors of the online portal.
“Especially my mother, who at 88 years old still helps in the shop, I would have liked to have spared her from experiencing this.”

Staff shortages bring entrepreneurs to their knees
There are two main reasons for the closure: “Firstly, I have been looking intensively for staff for the store for at least two years now.
But no one is getting in touch,” says Fick in an interview with

But he could hardly manage the business himself, which is why the decision was made earlier.
And the question of a suitable successor also gave him a headache.
Therefore there is no other option than to give up the butcher shop.

But there is a happy ending for the long-standing staff of the Fick butcher's shop: "Fortunately, they quickly found something again, the industry is desperately looking for something," says the butcher.
