Arrest after 30 years of escape: How Klette tricked the police when he was arrested
Daniela Klette was on the run for over 30 years.
There was also an international search for her and the suspected ex-RAF members Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg, who were also in hiding.
However, when the 65-year-old was arrested in Berlin on February 26, only two regular patrol officers were on duty, as RTL reported.
According to ntv
information , the wanted person
initially showed the officers a false ID.
The police officers nevertheless instructed the 65-year-old to come with them.
Before that, she was allowed to go to the toilet, police sources said.
There Klette apparently managed to warn Burkhard Garweg.
She wrote a message and then flushed her cell phone's SIM card down the toilet, they said.
According to Spiegel
information , you have me, she is said
to have written accordingly.
“There is a slight suspicion that one might not have assumed at all that one would actually meet the terrorist during this last survey,” says terrorism expert Michael Ortmann.
This is also indicated by a statement from the head of the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA), Friedo de Vries.
When Klette was arrested, the investigators' reaction was "rather disbelieving," the LKA chief told

The search continues: What the investigators know about the whereabouts of Burkhard Garweg
According to research, Burkhard Spiegel
's cell phone was
no longer in use since the day of Klette's arrest.
According to investigators, the 55-year-old lived in a trailer in Berlin-Friedrichshain under the code name “Martin”.
The former RAF terrorist was not found during a search.
However, devices for forging documents were found in the construction trailer, according to information from the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA), according to dpa.
There are “new indications that, for example, indicate a stay in another European country,” said de Vries in an interview with
Spiegel
.
Only in the case of Staub we have so far “no relevant search leads that would have put us on his trail.”
The Verden public prosecutor's office accuses Daniela Klette and the fugitives Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg of armed robberies that the trio is said to have committed between 1999 and 2016 in order to finance their underground life.
A podcast team had already discovered Klette before the police using facial recognition software last year.
“It is not legally possible for the police to simply 'search' the Internet for the same identity,” emphasized LKA boss de Vries
