The CDU wants to redesign citizens' money.
The Union party is calling for tougher sanctions – the traffic light sees an attack on the welfare state.
Berlin - Citizens' money remains a target for attacks by the opposition: The CDU seems to have a problem with the name alone.
The name points in the direction of an unconditional basic income - the CDU is therefore calling for the name to be renamed "New Basic Security", reports the
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung,
citing a four-page position paper.
The CDU concept is to be presented on Monday (March 18).
In addition to a name change, the party is also calling for far-reaching changes to social benefits.
If the Christian Democrats have their way, only those who cannot support themselves through their own work or existing assets would receive citizen's benefit, or "new basic security".
Sharp criticism comes from the traffic light coalition, whose members fear serious consequences for the welfare state as a result of the changes.

But according to the CDU's proposals, it's not just those who refuse to work who should no longer receive citizens' money.
Existing assets should also prevent entitlement to social benefits.

The party is also demanding that the limit for protective assets be lowered from the current 40,000 euros.

Green Party politician Andreas Audretsch told

that such a change poses a particular danger for middle-class families.
The CDU’s proposals are “above all a blow to the self-employed”.
These are partly dependent on citizens' money, for example due to the cancellation of an order.
If the CDU's changes were accepted, it would mean that these people would be denied state help because they have too much wealth.
The Christian Democrats' idea is therefore directed "against people who dare to do something and move the country forward," warned Audretsch.
Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) also firmly rejects the Union party's proposals.
“The Union is providing answers to the current economic and political situation we are in by playing off working people against people who are not doing so well at the moment,” said Heil on Saturday.
“The Union never thinks of anything other than attacks on the welfare state.”

Audretsch believes the demands of CDU leader Friedrich Merz and Linnemann are excessive.
The radical elimination of social benefits would mean that some families would be unable to afford food or clothing.
“Friedrich Merz and Carsten Linnemann have completely lost their temper,” said Audretsch.
However, he took up the Union's claim to “demand and support” and emphasized that work must be worth it again.
That's why his party is campaigning, for example, for an increase in the minimum wage.
