Nuremberg – A large-scale, cross-border anti-terrorism exercise called “Counter Terrorism Exercise” (CTE 2024) took place last weekend.
Organized by the Middle Franconia Police Headquarters, around 800 emergency services in Middle Franconia and the neighboring Upper Palatinate trained in joint action in the event of terrorist attacks and threatening situations.
CTE 2024 – special units from Austria are also there
The CTE 2024 marks the first nationwide full-scale exercise by special units since 2012. At that time, the Schleswig-Holstein State Criminal Police Office organized the last joint training at the federal level.
Special units from all federal states and the federal police, as well as special forces from the Customs Criminal Investigation Office and a special unit from the Austrian Federal Police took part in this year's exercise in Bavaria.

Rehearsals for an emergency – scenario on Saturday is reminiscent of the terrorist attack on Israel
The exercise scenario, constructed based on the findings from the two terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015, began on Saturday morning in the Otto Lilienthal barracks in Roth.
It simulated an attack on a public viewing event in which terrorists carried out armed attacks on visitors and took hostages.
This required various intervention, negotiation and access measures from the special units involved for several hours.

On Sunday night, the exercise moved to the Nuremberg city area.
There were further simulated attacks on passers-by in the area of a subway station and a subway train.
In addition to the intervention measures against the armed perpetrators, the special units also had to provide emergency medical care for several seriously injured people.
On Sunday, the trail of the fictitious terrorists led the emergency services to the former Maxhütte ironworks in Sulzbach-Rosenberg.
There, as well as in the Schweppermann barracks in Amberg and the Sulzbach-Rosenberg riot police department, final measures were taken against the perpetrator group, which had prepared for another terrorist attack with a so-called CBRN weapon.
Herrmann visits CTE 2024 – “well prepared for a wide range of dangers and threats”
Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, who personally got an idea of how the CTE 2024 was going, expressed his satisfaction with the initial findings from the exercise: “Our emergency services have impressively demonstrated that, hand in hand, they are well-equipped for a wide range of dangers and situations Threat situations are.”
The Central Franconian police chief Adolf Blöchl also drew a positive initial assessment of the CTE 2024: “Only those who prepare intensively for such operations will be able to act when it comes to saving lives and stopping terrorists in acute dangerous situations!”, he emphasized.

The organization of the CTE 2024 represented an organizational effort for the Middle Franconia Police Headquarters, which required a preparation phase of over a year.
In total, over 2,000 people took part in the exercise in various functions, including 500 extras who portrayed the fictional attack on the public viewing event as realistically as possible.
The police chief of Middle Franconia, full of admiration for the implementation of the CTE 2024, paid his thanks to the organizing team.
He also consciously directed his appreciation to those who work in external institutions and organizations. “For me, this commitment shows that the police can rely on a well-functioning network even in an emergency!” said Police Chief Blöchl, praising the extensive support in the implementation the CTE 2024.
His gratitude went not only to the internal team, but also to the external helpers and participants.
They all contributed to the successful implementation of CTE 2024.
