What to plant, sow or harvest in March?
Do not use plastic
Tarpaulin, pots and even garden hose: plastic reigns in the garden.
What if you banned it to limit pollution, reduce your waste and improve aesthetics?
Glass greenhouse, metal watering can, resin frame or tunnel, cardboard instead of plastic for tarpaulins, eco-designed pots: replacement solutions abound.
Also make your fertilizer and compost to avoid bags and bottles and create your decorative plant labels.
Hide your compost and outdoor trash cans well
Even in treated wood, the composter is not the most beautiful object to display!
Give your bin or your trash cans a dedicated corner, hidden from view.
Install a pair of cane fences and shrubs, or a trellis with evergreen climbers to revegetate (and hide) everything.
Maintain your plants
To beautify the garden, think about pruning and cleaning: take advantage of spring to remove dry stems, cut dead branches, weed and scratch the ground around perennials.
Identify plants affected by frost to replace them.
Don't forget the mulch (mineral or natural) as a finish: the result will be cleaner and you will protect yourself from late frosts.
Work the edges of the flowerbeds
Sharpness above all: highlight the edges of the flowerbeds by cutting the lawn flush with a shovel.
Materialize the border by placing a row of bricks or paving stones.
Place them in a trench equivalent to their height + 3 to 5 cm.
Choose your plants wisely based on size and colors
The harmonious combination of colors and textures enhances a massif.
Structure it with graphic or tall plants (ball topiary or cordyline), then give volume with grasses or lavender.
Dramatize with a star plant (Delphinium, Ornamental garlic).
Over the months, fill in empty spaces with annual plants (rule of 2/3 annuals to 1/3 perennials).
As for colors, go hot and cold with red or bluish colors, but always provide a counterpoint to avoid monotony.
Avoid excessive clutter
Don't break the serenity of your garden with too many decorative elements or plants.
First, respect the planting distances so as not to smother your plants.
Then give your garden a Marie Kondo treatment by dividing the plants that are too imposing (and offer them!) and sort out your decoration.
Also store your tools in a shelter and other games in outdoor boxes.
Change the exterior lighting
Your dolled-up garden deserves efficient outdoor lighting: solar or electric, invest in a lighting system that will highlight your emblematic plants and some decorative elements.
Also take care of the light around the terrace to enjoy the long summer evenings.
Refreshed, tidy and highlighted, your garden will be the envy of people.
