The Egling Fire Department is celebrating its 150th birthday this year.

Compared to the founding period, the tasks for the volunteer rescuers are significantly more diverse today.

Egling – “Rescue, extinguish, recover, protect”: Under this motto, Egling’s fire department has been coming to the aid of those in need for 150 years.

This year the emergency services are celebrating their anniversary.

Over the decades, a number of folders were accumulated, full of newspaper articles, old photos and documents from life savers.

These are kept by Honorary Chairman Josef Bail.

On the occasion of his upcoming 150th birthday, the 69-year-old looks back on the past with chairman Michael Förg.

150 years of the Egling Fire Department: It all started on November 24, 1874 with 44 men

It started on November 24, 1874 in Egling with 44 men: They had three fire ladders, three fire hooks and 16 fire buckets at their disposal to fight the fire.

The rescue workers drew fire-fighting water from the stream and then dragged the full buckets to the fire site, says Bail.

“Extinguishing was difficult, which is why every fire was like a catastrophe.” The purchase of the first hand-held pressure fire extinguisher in 1905 made this work a little easier.

When it was founded, firefighting was the main task of the volunteers. “Now our work has become significantly more diverse,” says the chairman.

This doesn't just include help in the event of accidents.

For 23 years, the Eglingen fire department has run a so-called first responder unit, professional volunteer first aiders.

The team of around 25 people is deployed in medical emergencies, such as a heart attack.

“By the time the Sanka from Wolfratshausen arrives in Egling, we will have already been there.

“Especially in cases like this, every minute counts,” says the 54-year-old.

The unit is alerted on average every two days.

It is not uncommon for those who were rescued to stop by the fire station afterwards or send a thank you card.

Förg: “When a stranger suddenly stands in front of you and thanks you with the words: 'Thanks to you, I'm still alive' - that makes you incredibly happy and motivates you.”

Egling Fire Department celebrates 150th anniversary: Big challenges through technical innovations

However, the armed forces are faced with major challenges due to advancing technical innovations, currently such as electric cars and solar systems.

“They are much more difficult to delete,” reports Honorary Chairman Bail.

“That makes good training all the more important,” adds Förg.

Even he, as an experienced firefighter, has to constantly educate himself on these points.

Cohesion has always played a major role in the rescue services.

Back in the 1940s, the comrades converted a disused military truck into their first emergency vehicle.

“The 82-year-old car is roadworthy – and is still used today at festivals and classic car meetings,” says Bail proudly.

In the same way, the construction of the new fire station from 1984 was “completely self-contributed,” as Förg emphasizes.

71 helpers put a total of 7,000 hours of work into the major project.

“Every single brick was processed free of charge.”

Aside from hard work, the fire department also knows how to party.

One of their last big celebrations: the 100th anniversary celebrations in July 1975. The whole town celebrated with them.

That's exactly how it should work again this year.

To mark the 150th birthday, the comrades are organizing a festival weekend from Saturday, July 6th to Sunday, July 7th.

Plans include an open day with demonstrations and a festival Sunday with a church procession and a cozy get-together.

Bail hopes that there will be as many festive occasions as possible afterwards.

The 69-year-old couldn't imagine Egling without a fire department.

“Aside from protecting the place, we are an important contact point for young people.”

Apart from protecting the place, we are an important contact point for young people.

Josef Bail, honorary chairman

There are some young people among the 153 members.

Every Monday evening their meeting point is the fire station.

Sometimes just for an exchange, sometimes for a training evening.

“We hope that there will always be people who are enthusiastic about the fire service.

Things have to go on with us,” says Förg.

“Fortunately, we are currently well positioned.”
