"The version of the Regulation on packaging and packaging waste approved by the representatives of the 27 Member States at Coreper level is a decisive step forward with which we are very satisfied. In fact, the text provides for the obligation at European level to use some compostable applications and others may also be foreseen in autonomy from the member states. Finally, compostable bioplastics can be exempted from the bans that affect single-use plastic packaging, for example that for fruit and vegetables and for the horeca sector".
This was stated by Luca Bianconi, president of Assobioplastiche.
The new text also confirms the exemption of the minimum recycled content for compostable bioplastics and the possibility of their recycling not only organically, but also mechanically.
"Thanks to the new legislation - concludes Bianconi - compostable applications such as shopping bags, fruit and vegetable bags, drink capsules, plates, glasses, trays, screens, will be able to deploy all their potential. They will thus contribute to increasing the quantity and quality of household waste throughout Europe, the collection of which this year has become mandatory throughout the EU".
At the end of the trilogue phase, the text now passes to final approval first by the plenary of Parliament and subsequently by the Council of the European Union.
