Highlights: Association sees alarming increase in right-wing violence. At least 390 people were affected by attacks in total - children and young people are increasingly the victims. The increase in racist attacks by more than half compared to 2022 is primarily “due to the increasingly racist climate in Brandenburg,” says managing director Judith Porath. The Victim Perspective, an advice center for those affected by right-wing violence, has registered a large increase in right-wing acts of violence in Brandenburg.

She is concerned about developments in schools.

Potsdam - According to the Victim Perspective Advice Center, the number of right-wing acts of violence in Brandenburg has increased alarmingly - with significantly more brutal actions.

The club counted 242 right-wing motivated attacks last year - after 138 in 2022, as it announced on Monday in Potsdam.

That's an increase of 75 percent.

The main motive in six out of ten acts of violence was racism, as the victim's perspective reported.

The increase in racist attacks by more than half compared to 2022 is primarily “due to the increasingly racist climate in Brandenburg,” said managing director Judith Porath.

The AfD encouraged this climate, while other parties “strengthened it with anti-refugee measures and statements.”

The association also recorded a sharp increase in physical injuries.

The number of dangerous physical injuries rose from 39 to 60 last year.

This is the highest number since 2018. At least 390 people were affected by attacks in total - children and young people are increasingly the victims.

More acts of violence across the country

Since this review, the advice center has recorded more threats and coercion - not only when those affected turn to it, but also when they are simply recorded by the police.

According to the association, even with the previous counting method, there would have been a significant increase in the number of violent crimes at 178.

According to the victim's perspective, the increase can be seen almost across the board.

The increase in right-wing violent acts was particularly strong in the districts of Dahme-Spreewald (from 7 to 24), Oberhavel (from 7 to 25), in the Uckermark (from 8 to 21) and in the city of Frankfurt (Oder) (from 6 to 16 ) been.

More and more attacks on children and young people

Just over a third of the victims last year were children and young people (34 percent).

In 2022 the proportion was still around a quarter.

Violence is used uninhibitedly, regardless of whether a two-year-old child is present, said consultant Joschka Fröschner.

The victim perspective records a problematic increase in right-wing acts of violence in Brandenburg schools.

Last year, the association registered 15 acts of violence against children and young people in educational institutions, while only one incident was reported in 2022.

About a week ago it became known that a teacher in Cottbus was said to have attacked two students with a migrant background.

One of the two was so seriously injured that he had to be hospitalized.

The two cases from Cottbus were “not the only cases” in which teaching or support staff were the perpetrators, said consultant Joschka Fröschner.

However, most incidents occurred between students, with the perpetrator often being older than the victim.

He sees schools unable to protect those affected by right-wing violence and respond appropriately.

A teacher from Burg im Spreewald described in an anonymous open letter in 2023 that they were confronted with right-wing extremism, sexism and homophobia every day.

Similar incidents are reported at other schools.

The numbers from the victim perspective differ from those from the police.

The club receives attacks that are not reported to the police.

According to its own information, the association advises victims of right-wing, racist and anti-Semitic violence.

The Interior Ministry has not yet presented the balance of politically motivated crimes for the past year.

In 2022, the number of crimes with a right-wing political background rose to 2,046 cases - a new high since 2001. dpa
