Bavaria's Deputy Prime Minister Aiwanger is against cannabis legalization.

The federal party is planning something else.

Will the Free Voters fall out?

Munich - Dispute among the Free Voters: According to the Bavarian Vice Prime Minister and party leader Hubert Aiwanger, cannabis legalization must be stopped.

However, for all marijuana supporters in Bavaria, this is no reason to worry: according to General Secretary Gregor Voht, the federal party is fundamentally positive about legalization.

It is unclear how the Free Voters of Bavaria plan to enforce the federal law on their own, since it does not require approval in the Bundesrat.

In a statement, Voht was open to the sale of cannabis in licensed shops under the condition of a so-called “drug driving license”.

Voht said his goal was to “modernize addiction policy,” including through the decriminalization of other drugs, according to the

Abendzeitung

.

For Voht, decriminalization mainly plays a role in combating addiction: “Help does not consist of the harshest possible punishment.”

However, a distinction must be made between consumers and dealers, says Voht.

Aiwanger remains bold – dispute among the Free Voters, unity in Bavaria

Aiwanger did not give the

AZ

a correct answer to the dispute between the federal party line and the Bavarian state party .

He simply referred to the goal of “minimizing the consumption of the dangerous drug, especially through early information and prosecution of the dealers.”

The general secretary of the Free Voters in Bavaria, Susann Enders, explained according to

Bayerischer Rundfunk

: “Under no circumstances is what the traffic light is doing worth supporting.” The cannabis no vote is not just left to the CSU.

The Free Voters, who are currently at three percent in Bundestag polls, could have to skimp quite a bit on the dispute between the federal and state levels in the 2025 election campaign.

Disunity is rarely well received, as has been made clear again and again in the past by the Left party, but also in the traffic light government.

After Markus Söder first shot against the Free Voters because of the federal position, there is at least unity in the Bavarian government: "By the way, I'm pleased that our coalition partner in Bavaria supports our hard line," said Söder, according to

AZ

.

Söder also supported cannabis legalization in 2018.

Voht confident for free voters in the 2025 federal election - everyone dissatisfied with the traffic light policy

Regarding a possible dispute over the Free Voters' party program, Voht told

AZ

: "I have no doubt that Aiwanger supports this." The dissatisfaction is more likely due to the "intensification in the debate" due to a lack of a "clear security concept" from the traffic light government .

Cannabis release was already in the Free Voters' federal election program in 2021, on the initiative of the party's youth organization, said Voht.

“Calling folk festivals an open drug scene, legalizing cannabis,” said Aiwanger in a post on being stopped.

It is questionable whether a compromise can be found with the Free Voters of Bavaria.

The demand in the election manifesto is as follows: “We are therefore open to the legalization of other drugs, such as cannabis, provided it is scientifically justifiable and the above improvements in addiction prevention and treatment as well as other additional measures have been taken.” The drug driving license, which according to the election program can also be revoked if misused, is also anchored in it.
