During his lifetime, Otto Kärner (†) was considered shy of publicity.

Although he is one of the great patrons of the Tegernsee Valley, he is known only to a few.

Now a memorial took place for the founder of the foundation.

Rottach-Egern

– Otto Kärner (1924-2005) was a former successful textile entrepreneur and honorary citizen of the market town of Wiesau in Upper Palatinate.

He was also considered a lover of people and animals alike.

“The Tegernsee Valley owes a lot to Otto Kärner.

On the one hand, we want to honor that, and on the other hand, we want to remember him, who never wanted to be at the forefront himself, and remember his work,” says Anton Lentner, chairman of the board of the Otto Kärner Foundation based in Rottach-Egern.

Otto Kärner and his wife moved there from Wiesau around 40 years ago - more precisely to Georg-Hirth-Straße - after their son and company successor had a fatal accident and their two daughters moved away.

Otto Kärner wrote company history in Wiesau

Otto Kärner was a model manufacturer of the economic miracle and wrote company history in Wiesau.

Kärner, who was born in Marktredwitz on March 28, 1924, founded the Otto Kärner KG clothing factory shortly after the war, when he was just 21 years old.

Initially a small business in a rented sports hall, the company moved into its own premises just three years after it was founded.

Kärner clothing works had made a name for themselves worldwide

At its peak, up to 800 people worked in the Kärner clothing factories, which have made a name for themselves worldwide due to the high quality standards of their products.

Kärner showed himself to be a supporter and benefactor by supporting his home community and its clubs, for example with a donation of 500,000 German marks for his 60th birthday in 1984. As a thank you, the people of Wiesau gave him the title of honorary citizen and also named a street after him him.

The Kärner couple led a secluded life in Rottach-Egern

A delegation from the Upper Palatinate also traveled to the Tegernsee Valley on Sunday (March 17th) to take part in the memory of the deceased and to pay tribute to Kärner in his adopted home.

The Kärners lived a secluded life here.

By chance, dog owner Otto Kärner, who would have now celebrated his 100th birthday, met Rottach tax advisor Anton Lentner while walking the dog.

They became friends.

When Kärner was widowed, Lentner and Kärner's bank advisor Reinhard Wira advised him on the establishment of a foundation, for which they still serve on the foundation's board today, together with Rottach-Egern's mayor Christian Köck and the former mayor Franz Hafner.

Gönner felt a close connection to the animal shelter in Weissach

Since Otto Kärner felt closely connected to the animal shelter in Weissach, where he often had his own four-legged friend looked after during his vacations, the foundation's funds should benefit animal protection and in particular the operation of the animal shelter.

The purpose of the foundation explicitly states: “… to give the animals good care and protection”.

Otto Kärner has made excellent and, above all, long-term provisions, reports Reinhard Wira from the foundation board.

After selling his company in Wiesau, Kärner acquired condominiums on Schwaighofstrasse in Tegernsee.

“He was an extremely understanding landlord there and demonstrated his social nature here too,” says Wira.

After his death in 2005, these apartments were transferred to the foundation.

In this way, the animal shelter was acquired by the Tegernseer Tal animal protection association, and additions and expansions were made possible.

For example, the cat and dog house was built largely with funds from the Otto Kärner Foundation.

In addition, the foundation regularly subsidizes the personnel costs of the animal shelter employees and thus the ongoing operations of the facility.

Chairwoman of the animal protection association: “Thinking of him with fond memories”

“We are very, very grateful to Otto Kärner for thinking so far-sightedly,” says the chairwoman of the Tegernseer Tal animal protection association, Johanna Ecker-Schotte: “We have fond memories of the great animal and human lover Otto Kärner.”
