Edgar Schreiber from Kreuth is a phenomenon on two wheels: The 96-year-old still cycles several kilometers every day.

Weissach

– How many kilometers has Edgar Schreiber cycled in his life?

“Hard to say,” answers the pensioner.

He has only been riding his bike for almost 30 years. He recently celebrated his 96th birthday.

Since his childhood: Cycling has been Schreiber's passion

Cycling is Kreuther's great passion.

“It’s a quirk, an illness,” says Schreiber, who grew up in the Thuringian Forest.

He learned to ride a bike at the age of ten.

“There were no children’s bikes back then,” he remembers.

That's why he had to learn how to pedal on his father's bike.

“But of course it was far too big.” At some point he got his older sister’s bike.

Even as a child, cycling was his favorite activity.

Around 40 years ago, Schreiber and his wife moved to the Tegernsee Valley.

“I always had a passion for Bavaria,” he explains.

He first worked as a caretaker in Bad Wiessee.

He later applied to the RVO in Tegernsee as a bus driver.

He drove the buses around the lake until he retired.

Two wheels and no motor: Even at 96, the Kreuther doesn't want an e-bike

In his free time he preferred to travel on two wheels and without a motor.

Tours around the Wendelstein Mountains, to the Austro-Hungarian border or to Switzerland - no route was too far for him.

When Schreiber retired, he said goodbye to his car altogether.

He went shopping or went to doctor's appointments by bike. “I didn't use my car for a whole six months.

So it could go away completely,” he explains.

On some days he covered up to 200 kilometers: to Lake Chiemsee, around the lake and back again.

Two wheels and no engine – the 96-year-old still manages to do this today, even in rain, wind and snow.

With his rain cape, Schreiber is prepared for any weather - that's all he needs.

Nowadays, however, he's taking things a little easier.

His son takes care of errands for him and he rarely drives in snow.

The routes have also become shorter.

His regular route takes him over the Achen Pass.

On the way, he often stopped at an acquaintance's house who made him a cup of coffee.

But the pensioner now avoids paths with gradients.

“I would have to push it.

I don’t want that.” But an e-bike is out of the question for him.

“I really want to cycle.” Schreiber prefers to ride alone.

“I’m a loner,” he says with a smile.

His wife, who died 20 years ago, rarely accompanied him.

Schreiber goes to Glashütte every day

To stay fit, the 96-year-old still drives to Glashütte every day - a total of almost 40 kilometers.

When the weather is nice, he takes a bottle of beer with him and drinks it on the way.

His girlfriend from the Achenpass is now buried in the cemetery in Glashütte.

He visits her grave every now and then when he passes by.

Schreiber celebrated his birthday with his family.

Mayor Josef Bierschneider also registered for a visit.

“I never thought I would be this old.” But stopping cycling is not an option for him.
