Israel causes hunger in Gaza and uses hunger as a weapon of war - this is what the European Union's foreign policy commissioner, Joseph Borrell, said today (Monday).
"In Gaza we are no longer on the brink of starvation, we are in a state of famine, which affects thousands of people," Borel said at the opening of a conference on humanitarian aid to Gaza in Brussels.
"This is unacceptable. Hunger is used as a weapon of war. Israel causes hunger."
Burrell leads a particularly critical line towards the war that Israel is waging in Gaza, and recently claimed that it strengthened Hamas in order to weaken the Palestinian Authority and thwart the possibility of a Palestinian state.
Israel denies that it is causing hunger in Gaza, and accuses Hamas of harming the supply of humanitarian aid to the residents.
Arab and Western countries have recently increased food airdrops in the Gaza Strip, but aid organizations warn that this is not enough.
The United States has even begun an operation to build a temporary wharf on the shores of Gaza, through which goods can enter more quickly, but this will only be completed in a few weeks.
