The car manufacturer BMW has had problems with leaking exhaust gas recirculation coolers for several years.
This now also affects models from 2021 and 2022.
Munich – Because defective cooling systems pose a potential fire risk, BMW is ordering almost 800,000 vehicles back to the workshops.
Almost all diesel models built in 2021 and 2022 are affected by the current recall, according to a statement from
Auto Motor und Sport
magazine .
Risk has been known for a long time
The fact that BMW's EGR coolers sometimes have significant deficits is nothing new.
As early as 2018, the
Munich car manufacturer
had to start its first major recall campaign with half a million cars.
Specifically, then as now, the issue was that the coolant glycol could escape from leaky cooling systems and come into contact with soot deposits.
If this mixture comes into contact with heat, there is a risk of ignition.
As
Auto Motor und Sport
writes, would have
BMW still installed the faulty coolers.
The group itself refers to a revised version of the EGR cooler, which has been in use since 2022 and was created together with another supplier.
Apparently, these optimizations were not sufficient to completely eliminate the risk of fire.
The Federal Motor Transport Authority gets involved
In the database of the Federal Motor Transport Authority
All BMW vehicles affected by the current campaign are now listed.
This includes almost the entire diesel model range, i.e. both the series one to seven as well as the popular X series, as the car manufacturer reports.
This concerns the production years 2010 to 2022.
What is new is the monitoring of the recall by the Federal Motor Transport Authority
.
The authority wants “more active monitoring of the recall process, which now also extends to non-safety-relevant products”.
BMW, for its part, would like to make appropriate corrections to prevent future incidents.
The reference number 008124 in the recall database of the Federal Motor Transport Authority provides further information.
