The law against violence against teachers and school staff, the first signatory, Lega MP Rossano Sasso, is in the Official Gazette and will come into force from 30 March.
It provides for a significant increase in prison sentences: from the current five years for assault, to seven and a half years, and from three to four and a half years for contempt.
The law will not only protect teachers, but will extend to all school staff, including school managers and ATA staff.
In addition to punitive measures, it also provides for awareness training courses and the establishment of a national observatory on the safety of school staff which will have the task of reporting cases of violence, proposing initiatives and drawing up annual reports on the phenomenon.
Finally, the National Day of education and prevention against violence against school staff is established, to be celebrated every year on 15 December.
