The Geretsried Municipal Gallery shows caricatures and illustrations by Hans Reiser.

At the opening, the artist forbade any self-praise.

Geretsried – Mayor Michael Müller is also immortalized.

He stands between the “Krämmel-Tower” and a baby in the cradle who holds the flags of several nations in his left hand and a balloon with the inscription “...simply different” in his right hand.

Müller himself has a book called “The Mysterious S-Bahn Connection”.

Hans Reiser's pictures with the finest and surprising details have been on display in the municipal gallery on Elbestrasse since Friday.

Head of the Cultural Office Anita Zwicknagl invited people to the vernissage on Friday, and numerous fans of the Reichersbeur cartoonist and illustrator accepted the invitation.

The 72-year-old's works are reflections of society, especially of “Homo Bavaricus”.

Reiser called his voluptuous woman and his established man the “Centaean” and the “Centaeer,” each half farmer, half horse.

The “oide Kraudara” is a grim-looking thug whose bushy beard forms an unappetizing tangle with the consumed white cabbage.

A lot of things are unappetizing – but still delicious.

Reiser has selected around 50 oil paintings and gouaches for the exhibition.

The topics range from the “blind emperor” (Franz Beckenbauer), who allows a sheik to pass him a few 500 euro notes in Qatar, to a highly topical series on artificial intelligence, to the self-portrait “Bauchpinsler”, in which Reiser depicts himself Albrecht Dürer, who admired him, paints him on the naked middle of his body. The artist's “auto-laudation” is similarly self-ironic.

He thanks curator Albrecht Widmann, who, as a former gallery owner, always accompanies the city exhibitions.

Curator, that sounds like the spa director, says Reiser.

So his characters, wrapped up at home and staring into space, felt like they were in a sanatorium in Geretsried, where they were hanging on the wall and visitors were allowed to look at them.

After enjoying a good childhood, any self-praise is forbidden, explains the 72-year-old.

He is aware that his pictures remain in a “banal objectivity”.

Thanks to the explicit, drawn instructions and written explanations, the question, which is so important for viewers and critics alike, “What does the artist want to tell us?” doesn’t even arise for him. The musical accompaniment to the vernissage was as unusual as the speech: none meaningful, spherical harp sounds, but cheeky rock and country music, played by son Jan Reiser with a band.

Hans Reiser, who was born in Lenggries and grew up in Fall, studied at the Munich Art Academy after attending the Tegernseer Gymnasium.

He began as a surrealist and has remained true to this style to this day, albeit in a modified form.

He drew for magazines such as Spiegel, Playboy and SZ Magazine.

For more than 50 years he has also delivered a weekly cartoon on local political events to the Tölzer Kurier.
