"For us it is important to transform the memory of the past into an ethic of the present, of sharing co-responsibility, which is a living memory. They are dead, we must be more alive, give ourselves an extra move".

This is how Don Luigi Ciotti spoke to the initiative.

"The best way to remember is to commit ourselves, to take on our part of responsibility - he added - We have too many intermittent citizens and one of the most terrible diseases of recent times is delegation. There are many neutrals".

Don Ciotti recalled the importance of memory and commitment.

We must therefore "guard everyone's memories and revive those that have fallen into oblivion because they are remote. Transform them all into a responsibility".

For the president of Libera "we must free the past from the veil of hidden or manipulated truths and also from the rhetoric of memory which uses occasional words to celebrate in death what it has forgotten or failed to defend in life".

The rector Massimiliano Fiorucci underlined that "everyone's first right is to be remembered".

"It is an act of commemoration of the victims, an expression of profound solidarity but also an active memory that must make us look at today and prevent this from continuing to happen", he added.

Furthermore, for Senator Vincenza Rando, there is a need to relaunch the commitment.

"The university certainly has an important function but the commitment must be even more from those who have to provide the tools, such as the legislator. At this moment I feel that the legislator must be stimulated to safeguard the tools we have - he explained - I believe that the university on this can be an important driving force because it creates thought and vision, which side we want to be on".

During the event, among others, the president of the Italian scientific society for studies on mafia and anti-mafia, Nando Dalla Chiesa, also spoke.

"Putting the university into play brings together knowledge with ethics - he highlighted - The important thing is that what is memory does not become commemoration".

Dalla Chiesa explained that memory "questions us, it is demanding".

The event in the main hall of the rectorate was held a few days before the 29th Day of Remembrance and Commitment in memory of the innocent victims of the mafia organized by Libera which this year will take place in Rome.

Roma Tre University, together with other universities in the capital, will provide its patronage.
