It is an extremely rare marriage anniversary: only a few couples are able to celebrate their wedding anniversary - like a couple from Fürstenfeldbruck is now doing.

Fürstenfeldbruck – Renate and Eduard Heretsch from Bruck toasted their anniversary a few days ago after 70 years of marriage together.

Congratulations even came from the Federal President himself, said Eduard Heretsch (90) and proudly showed the congratulatory letter from Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The celebrating couple also received congratulations from Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder.

City councilor Franz Höfelsauer personally brought the city's congratulations.

“It also takes a lot of luck to go through life together for so long,” said Höfelsauer.

Theater group

Renate and Eduard Heretsch met and fell in love in Königshütte, Upper Silesia, in what is now Poland.

There they played in the theater group at the wagon and machine factory, where they both worked.

And the wedding bells rang relatively quickly.

In March 1954 there was a civil marriage and a church blessing in August.

“When Germans met back then, they got married very quickly,” said Eduard Heretsch.

“After all, they didn’t want the Poles to snatch the girls away from us,” he said with a smile.

The way to Bruck

The couple has lived in the district town since 1972, but the most dramatic event was probably their late escape from Poland.

“Disguised” as a visit to relatives in Braunschweig, the two managed to escape to the West in 1958.

“We were so happy that we managed to come to the West,” remembers Renate Heretsch (90) and smiles gratefully.

Initially housed in a reception camp, the young couple soon received a refugee apartment.

The only son Godehard was born in 1960, and the small family slowly took part in the Western economic miracle.

Eduard Heretsch worked at VW in Wolfsburg, his wife Renate worked in a canning factory near Braunschweig.

At BMW

As a mechanical engineer, Eduard Heretsch quickly found a connection with BMW after moving to Bavaria.

Renate Heretsch reports that her health problems began after a serious car accident in 1991 on one of her trips to Italy.

Until then, the couple enjoyed hiking in nature, looking for mushrooms and taking trips to South Tyrol, the Bavarian Forest and Austria.

With the support of their grandson Patrick and their granddaughter Katharina, as well as a nursing service and meals on wheels, Renate and Eduard Heretsch are spending their twilight years together in their own four walls.

“Everything needs to be well organized,” says Renate Heretsch gratefully.
