The First Responders Ottenhofen have a new emergency vehicle.

It was financed entirely through donations.

Ottenhofen - The first responders of the Ottenhofen fire department will be rolling out with a new vehicle in the future: The BMW X1, financed entirely by donations, was officially put into service on Friday.

What can the 50/1 first responder vehicle do better than the previous one?

“Everything,” Florian Wagner, deputy commander of the fire department and head of first responders, summarized on Friday and laughed.

This starts with the size of the BMW X1.

Especially in the back seat of the previous vehicle, things could quickly become crowded when fully equipped: “We were laughed at by the emergency services every time the five of us went out in the B-Class,” said Wagner, throwing a pained look out of the vehicle hall and over to the 2008 Mercedes B-Class, which was bought from the Unterhaching fire department five years ago for 5,000 euros and two crates of beer.

The BMW is also now equipped with the latest technology: from navigation to radio, everything runs via the central system, instead of having a single device for everything that also has to be operated by hand.

All of this saves time.

And that's ultimately what matters to first responders.

Because in an emergency, every second can make the difference between life and death.

“We are not an emergency doctor, we are not emergency services, but we are alerted when the rescue service or the emergency doctor is on the way from far away,” said the second commander, summarizing the work.

“And our job is to extend life – no matter how – until the specialists are on site.”

The first responder role does not fall under the municipality's duties.

Wagner is aware that they have already spent a lot of money converting the fire station and purchasing a new fire engine.

That's why the fire department had to look elsewhere to finance a new vehicle.

Local councilor Stefan Reischl got into a conversation with Johannes Empl from the Otto and Therese Stumpf Foundation.

This supports “Man and Creation”, which meant that the fire department and its first rescuers had almost automatically qualified: “We received 30,000 euros from the foundation, which is awesome,” said Wagner.

But that wasn't enough for a new car.

So Empl approached VR-Bank München Land.

Ottenhofen is “no longer entirely part of the Munich district,” joked the bank’s board member, Andreas Müller.

But people in the region still know that they exist and are sure to come close to them during operations.

That's why the people of Munich added the remaining 12,000 euros from the proceeds from the profit savings.

Further supporters for the interior design and external appearance were the Ottenhofen AXA representative Christian Holbinger, the Bruns company and Andreas Schaffner Load and Vehicle Security from Anzing.

Wagner and his colleagues have been working on the new vehicle for the past two weeks so that it can now officially go into service.

In order to ask the approximately 200 people who had gathered at the vehicle hall for the handover and commissioning to remain calm, Wagner sat down in the old Mercedes again and briefly let the siren wail.

The Ottenhofen fire department currently has around 50 active members and around the same number of fire service operations per year, summarized Commander Hermann Brandlmeier.

On top of that, there would be 45 to 50 for the first responders: “If you consider that this is not a mandatory task for the fire department, that is quite a considerable number of operations.”

And one man's trash is another man's treasure: The Bruckmühl fire department (Rosenheim district) could use a new, used first responder vehicle.

During the event, the key to the Mercedes was also given to the Bruckmühlers for 4,000 euros and two crates of beer.

While the guests were still standing together over beer and bratwurst, the first mission for the new BMW came: “Traffic accident after turning maneuver”.

We immediately got into the vehicle and onto the street with the lights flashing.

Because every second counts.
