An AfD success could block the constitutional judge elections in Thuringia.

The divided state parliament does not agree on a constitutional change.

Erfurt - Björn Höcke, AfD parliamentary group leader in the Thuringian state parliament, is preparing the AfD for a victory in the upcoming state elections.

Given the current polls in Thuringia, the AfD probably has a good chance of getting over 30 percent of the vote.

Since constitutional judges in Thuringia are elected with a two-thirds majority, the AfD – if it wins more than a third of the votes – could block judicial elections in the future.

The Süddeutsche

recently concluded that this would give the AfD the opportunity to have its own judge

.

AfD could paralyze Thuringia's constitutional court - Thuringia's state parliament divided

Because: If the AfD blocks the election of judges, the Thuringian Constitutional Court would slowly be paralyzed.

Proceedings would not move forward and consultations would have to be started again.

Höcke is aware of this.

With a blocking minority, “the constitution could no longer be changed against us, or the election of constitutional judges would no longer be possible without us,” he told the newspaper

Freies Wort in 2023.

In order to prevent such a – quite likely – scenario, the state parliament could now make a change to the constitution with a two-thirds majority.

But it doesn't look like that: another constitutional amendment is already being discussed.

It's about volunteering, sustainability, referendums and citizens' proposals, as the

ARD

"Tagesschau" reported.

However, despite pressure from civil society, Parliament has not yet been able to reach an agreement.

The Thuringian state parliament falls apart during the election of judges – the AfD is happy

A state parliament debate on the topic turned into a spectacle on Friday (March 15th).

The Left complained that democracy was being “abused and disrespected”.

The FDP describes the drama as a “kindergarten”.

The parliamentary director of the SPD, Dorothea Marx, said

tagesschau.de

self-critically about the chaotic situation in the state parliament: “People don’t understand why we don’t deliver.”

And not everyone will probably go along with a reform of the election of constitutional judges.

Even banal term extensions currently seem to be an insoluble political issue in Thuringia.

According to the Süddeutsche

report, all parties had agreed on another term for deputy constitutional judge Ute Jung

- except the AfD.

After the secret election then the surprise.

Jung failed, missing a total of five votes.

However, the political divide in the Thuringian state parliament is becoming clear.

An agreed-upon thing becomes a test.

And the Thuringian state parliament is running out of time.

Reform will probably no longer be possible until Thuringia's state elections.
