Three people lost their lives this March weekend on the roads of the Côte d'Azur, reported the Alpes-Maritimes firefighters following their interventions.
In each case, these accidents involved motorized two-wheelers traveling at night.
In that from Friday to Saturday, first, a 30-year-old motorcyclist allegedly lost control of his machine at the Cap de Croix tunnel, in Nice, on the A8 motorway towards Aix-Marseille.
He was driving at high speed around 1:30 a.m.
The road was temporarily closed while 17 firefighters tried to resuscitate the man, to no avail.
Still in Nice, around 4:30 a.m. on the northern roadway of the Promenade des Anglais, another 24-year-old individual lost his life on his two-wheeler while there too, he was traveling at a high speed.
12 deaths since January
Sunday evening around 10 p.m., two motorcycles and a car were involved in a traffic accident on the lower corniche in the village of Èze.
In cardiorespiratory arrest, the young 21-year-old driver of one of the two motorcycles could not be resuscitated by the emergency services.
The other 26-year-old motorcyclist was transported to Pasteur hospital in serious condition.
The driver of the car came out shocked but unhurt.
If a drop in injury accidents on the Côte d'Azur roads was noted in January, they increased by 30% in February compared to last year.
75 accidents were recorded (compared to 45 in 2023) and seven people (compared to four last year) died.
Each time, they were of a certain seriousness since 90 people were injured (+45%), according to figures from the departmental road safety observatory.
Since the start of the year, 12 people have been killed on the department's roads.
At the beginning of March, the death of an employee of Escota, the highway company, caused great emotion.
In the Alpes-Maritimes in 2023, the prefecture recalls that 54 people lost their lives in connection with traffic accidents and 355 were seriously injured.
Prefect Hugues Moutouh asked the police to
“show great firmness against road offenders”
and he particularly targets those who are intoxicated or excessively speeding.
