"The industrial sector of the circular economy and recycling, made up of mainly family-run SMEs, represents an excellence that makes Italy a leading country at an international level in paper recycling. The objectives set for 2025 by the EU for the recycling of cellulosic packaging, we have already surpassed them since 2009, sixteen years early, thanks to a widespread plant network made up of 700 plants".
The general director of Unirima, Francesco Sicilia, said this while speaking in the Senate at a conference on the occasion of 'World Recycling Day' with the aim of increasing citizens' awareness of the role of recycling in protecting the environment and the climate.
"Now what we need is for all the necessary efforts to be made to break down the non-technological barriers that continue to weigh on companies - explained Sicilia -.
From the procedures for renewing environmental authorizations to the commercial defense of companies, up to the failure to respect the principles of competition ".
As regards European regulations, Sicily thanked the Government and Parliament "for the defense of one of the key principles of the circular economy, the end of waste. In this case too, Italy led the way, having been the first country in Europe to have issued an end of waste regulation for paper".
