It was enough to listen to the sound of gravel in the main courtyard of the Élysée to measure this evening of Wednesday March 20 the degree of agitation currently hovering at the top of the State.
A parade of ministers and executives from the majority, invited at nightfall around the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron to reflect on a single theme: the state of public finances, in the red, with the risk of further deterioration stronger after the decisions of several rating agencies in the coming weeks.
The subject weighs down the morale of the executive.
“But tomorrow, it risks being that of the French,” worries a pillar of Macronie.
Emmanuel Macron therefore received in two stages.
For an hour and a half, from 5:30 p.m., Gabriel Attal, Bruno Le Maire (Finance), Thomas Cazenave (Budget), Gérald Darmanin (Interior), Catherine Vautrin (Labor), and Christophe Béchu (Ecological Transition).
Then, at dinner time, the party leaders of the majority and the presidents of the parliamentary groups.
“I don’t believe in fate.
We have assets, possible levers to withstand this shock.
I therefore expect you to make very concrete proposals to me,” said the Head of State during the first meeting, according to a participant.
