At a conference, the federal states are calling for a move away from work bans for refugees.

The payment card was also an issue.

Rostock - Asylum seekers who arrive in Germany are initially not allowed to work: a work ban of three months is the rule, and even longer periods often apply.

This also applies to people with toleration status who have been living here for a long time.

The rules have now been relaxed and immigration authorities are now required to issue work permits.

But that's not enough for the federal states.

Federal states against work bans for refugees with the prospect of staying

At a meeting in Rostock-Warnemünde, the integration ministers of the federal states decided to advocate for the abolition of the work ban for all refugees with legally clarified prospects of remaining.

They want a greater move away from legally enshrined work bans, according to the corresponding application, which 15 of 16 federal states agreed to.

“We need skilled workers and workers in many areas, so it is important that we get refugees into work more quickly and give them access to the labor market,” explained NRW Integration Minister Josefine Paul (Greens) to

.

More integration courses and qualification advice required

In addition to the direct accommodation of refugees, greater emphasis should also be placed on integration, says Paul.

“I expect significantly more initiatives and resources from the federal government.

The federal, state and local authorities form a community of responsibility when it comes to integration.” The conference of integration ministers has therefore called for strengthening the integration infrastructure in its proposals.

This means: more language and integration courses as well as faster recognition of qualifications and professional qualifications.

Migrants are often unable to work immediately in the professions they have learned because their qualifications are not or only partially recognized by the authorities.

“The federal government must place the recognition and qualification advice that has so far been supported by projects on a permanent and comprehensive basis,” demands Minister Paul.

More money from the federal government is needed for this: “Precisely because we expect immigration to Germany to remain at a high level, structural financing is needed from the federal level.”

CSU politician: “Incentive for more illegal migration”

There had been clear criticism from Bavaria in advance.

Sandro Kirchner (CSU), State Secretary in the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, told

: “Anyone who wants to completely abolish employment bans is offering an incentive for even more illegal migration.” Such bans, for example for asylum seekers from safe countries of origin, are a means of curbing illegal migration Migration.

Payment card for refugees: Bavaria takes a special approach

Another topic at the Integration Ministers' Conference was the payment card for refugees.

“A payment card makes an important contribution to reducing pull effects to Germany,” CSU politician Kirchner is convinced.

However, this is controversial.

State Minister Reem Alabali-Radovan (SPD) recently explained in an interview with IPPEN.MEDIA that a discussion about “alleged pull factors” was not productive.

For most people, cash is not a reason to come to Germany.

Bavaria is taking a special approach when it comes to payment cards for refugees: Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) will give the starting signal for this on Wednesday (March 20th).
