Harry and Meghan were unaware that Duchess Kate had been diagnosed with cancer until it was revealed in the global media, a source in the know told the New York Post.
"They had no idea, this became known to them at the same time that it was known to the rest of the world," said the same source.
"This shows the damage they did to the royal family," the source continued and reported.
"The trust is broken, the royal family prefers to stay away from them."
When word of Kate's illness was announced, Harry and Meghan released a statement that read: "We wish health and healing to Kate and her family, hope they can recover privately and peacefully."
At this stage, it is not yet clear whether the couple will come to visit Kate in the UK.

Last night (Friday), Princess of Wales Kate Middleton revealed that she has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing a series of "preventative" chemotherapy treatments in a video released in which she is seen on a bench surrounded by greenery.
The wife of the British heir to the throne, Prince William, said that the discovery was received as a "total shock" and that she and her husband "are doing everything they can to deal with and manage the situation privately."
