Another traditional inn is closing.

The Schwarzer Adler inn in Bad Staffelstein was family-owned for centuries.

Now it has to close - the regret is great.

Bad Staffelstein - The Gasthof Schwarzer Adler in End near Bad Staffelstein was known for Schäufele, the home-brewed black beer according to grandfather's recipe and Franconian cuisine.

The restaurant and the associated hotel had been family-owned since the 16th century - before that the house was a post office.

The landlord couple Mathilde Meusser and Johann Erlbacher ran the business until the end of 2022, says the landlady's daughter Susanne Essmeyer in an interview with

Merkur.de.

“My mother and her husband had to stop because of their age.

“Unfortunately, Johann Erlbacher passed away last October,” explains the inn’s marketing officer.

The restaurant was finally leased to Florian Krappmann in January 2023.

But the operation was difficult until the end - and has now resulted in the closure of the traditional Franconian company.

Traditional restaurant closes: “Financial cushion for the winter” was missing

According to Essmeyer, the severe shortage of staff is primarily responsible for the inn's demise.

Around ten employees kept the business running - around 15 employees would have been needed for smooth operations.

“The problem exists everywhere in the catering industry.

“Nobody wants to work in the evenings or on weekends anymore,” says Essmeyer, explaining the lack of staff at the Schwarzer Adler.

The lack of staff then meant that some festivities had to be canceled.

“Celebrating in the summer always gives you a financial cushion for the winter.

“That was missing last year,” the marketing representative continues.

The lack of sales from the warm months ultimately forced the inn to close.

Great regret among the guests: “Everyone was very sad”

According to Essmeyer, the guests were very sorry about the short-term shutdown of the economy: “Everyone was very sad and thought it was a total shame.”

On the last day open, some regular guests came by to dine at the Schwarzer Adler one last time.

The closure is also very sad for the 78-year-old landlady Mathilde Meusser.

“She often remembers the times when the business was still going well.

Looking back, that makes her very sad.

The great challenges of the last few months have been a great burden for her,” says Essmeyer about her mother.

Uncertain future of the inn

What will happen next with the Black Eagle is still uncertain.

“Ideally we would like to sell.

“In the best case scenario, to a committed host couple who have always wanted to go to Upper Franconia,” says Essmeyer, explaining the further plans.

It is also important to them that the new catering company takes over the business with “heart and soul”.
