More than 200 deaths in 1999
In the early morning of September 13, a charge of 300 kg of TNT blasted an eight-story building in the south of the capital, killing nearly 120 residents in their sleep.
A few days earlier, more than 90 people were also killed in Moscow in the explosion of another building.
The attacks were attributed to
“Chechen terrorists”
and served as a prelude to the outbreak, in October 1999, of the second Russo-Chechen conflict.
Other theories have emerged suspecting the Russian security services (FSB) of being behind these attacks.
130 deaths in 2002
On the evening of October 23, a Chechen commando of 21 men and 19 women, heavily armed and equipped with large quantities of explosives, managed to infiltrate Moscow and take nearly a thousand people hostage at the Dubrovka theater. .
The siege lasted two days and three nights before ending with a special forces assault carried out using powerful gas, resulting in the death of almost all of the 130 victims.
15 deaths in 2003
On July 5, 2003, a double suicide attack at the entrance to a rock concert at the Touchino airfield in Moscow left 15 dead, in addition to the two female suicide bombers, and around fifty injured.
Some 20,000 young people were there to attend the traditional “Krylia” rock music festival.
The attack was not claimed but was attributed by the Russian authorities to Chechen independence rebels.
41 killed in 2004
The following year, an explosive attack on February 6 rocked the Moscow metro, killing 41 people.
It is claimed by an unknown Chechen group, “Gazotan Murdash”.
40 deaths in 2010
In 2010, a double suicide attack hit the Moscow metro, killing 40 people on March 19.
One of the explosions attributed to two female suicide bombers took place in the Lubyanka metro station, near the FSB headquarters.
37 deaths in 2011
On January 24, 2011, 37 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack at Moscow-Domodedovo airport in the arrival area of international flights.
It is claimed by the leader of the Islamist rebellion at the time, the Chechen Dokou Oumarov.
