On the front line to change the rules of the game and design a better future: March 23rd is World Meteorology Day, an event that aims to remember the fundamental role of this science in shaping a more resilient future society and how rapid and accuracy is increasingly important to save human lives.
"The Day serves to remind us that there is a sector, that of meteorological sciences, which studies the atmosphere of our planet. Taking advantage of observations, it has developed constantly improving models capable of predicting the behavior of the atmosphere", he said at ANSA the atmospheric physicist Dino Zardi, from the University of Trento.
A role, that of meteorologists, which is crucial in at least two fundamental aspects of everyone's lives: in the ability to predict, for example, catastrophic events and therefore save human lives, and in helping to plan the future, both in mitigation strategies as well as in developing new solutions to adapt to the future climate.
"We know that, if we don't change anything on a global level in the use of fossil fuels - added Zardi - we will have to expect a warming of around 4 or 5 degrees in Italy, compared to the pre-industrial era, by the end of the century. That's just 70 years, it will be the world of our children and grandchildren."
“Faced with unprecedented environmental challenges, we are not mere observers,” the national secretary of the World Meteorological Organization, Celeste Saulo, wrote in an open letter.
“Rather, we are called to change the rules of the game. Our role as scientists and defenders of the planet has never been more crucial,” she added.
