Popular lawsuit against red areas: The district is planning further steps

Highlights: Popular lawsuit against red areas: The district is planning further steps. Of the total area in the entire Erding district, 69.1 percent is agricultural land. Two thirds of all sport horses in Bavaria are kept on farms, which means attractive additional income for farmers. The Munich Water Management Office has now submitted applications for new measuring point drillings in the district. But these three new measuring points mentioned by district councilor Maria Grasser are all located in a groundwater body that is not currently designated as red.

The agricultural reception expresses the district's great appreciation for farmers.

Serious topics were also discussed.

Grüntegernbach

– District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer emphasized the appreciation for the farming community at the spring reception for agriculture in the Gottbrecht inn in Grüntegernbach.

“We want to make the work of farmers as producers of good and healthy food visible to the public and promote dialogue,” he explained.

There were 1,962 companies at the end of 2023.

“That’s as many businesses as the Munich and Freising districts combined,” says Bayerstorfer, who is a farmer himself.

Of the total area in the entire Erding district, 69.1 percent is agricultural land, despite the airport and many roads.

“This is a top value in the whole of Bavaria.” Local politicians have to be careful not to cut too much from this.

Nature conservation and biodiversity are important tasks.

“But food production is the priority.”

A central topic of the well-attended event was the so-called red areas, i.e. areas that were identified as areas with increased nitrate content in the groundwater.

The Erding district does not plan to withdraw the lawsuit filed in November 2023 together with two affected farmers, said the responsible department head Peter Stadick.

Rather, according to a press release from the district office, a popular lawsuit is also being sought to examine the constitutionality of the legislation.

Another district, Altötting, has promised support.

In the red areas, fertilization must be reduced by 20 percent.

Bayerstorfer and the affected farmers had argued several times that the few existing and considered measuring points were not suitable for a plausible measurement and designation of such extensive areas.

The Munich Water Management Office has now submitted applications for new measuring point drillings in the district.

However, these three new measuring points mentioned by district councilor Maria Grasser in the district council are all located in a groundwater body that is not currently designated as red and are therefore completely irrelevant to the two current red areas in the district, explained Stadick.

In the worst case, this could even lead to another red area in the district the next time the designation is redesignated.

He doesn't know anything about new nitrate measuring points planned by the water management office in the red areas of the district.

The statement that these new measuring points led to an exclusion in the Mühldorf and Landshut districts also does not correspond to the facts in any way.

Franz Bauschmid and Daniel Gschlößl from the district's producers' association for quality grains provided information about cultivation and sales options, experimental projects with new products such as chia seeds and dry rice, as well as regional cooperation, including with Erdinger Weißbräu.

The challenge was to keep up with the global market.

"We made it.

We have now had Festbier in Erding from Erding for the third year in a row,” said Bauschmid.

But the situation is very difficult.

Two years ago there were 40 euros for a quintal of wheat.

“At the moment we are talking about 14 euros,” says Bauschmid.

The heating value is 42 euros.

“We produce the best food with the highest standards in Germany and Bavaria.

Where do we get it from?

From all over the world.

“That doesn’t have to be the case,” criticized Bauschmid.

Thomas Schreder, managing director of the Bavarian Riding and Driving Association, outlined the history of horse keeping in the district in his lecture with reference to the coat of arms.

Two thirds of all sport horses in Bavaria are kept on farms, which means attractive additional income for farmers.
