No more e-scooters on public transport in Munich - from April 2nd, the Munich transport company will ban the scooters.

The batteries are too dangerous.

Munich - The Munich transport company will ban the taking of e-scooters on subways, trams and buses in the future.

The MVG announced in a press release that e-scooters will no longer have any place in the subway stations themselves in the future.

The ban comes into effect after Easter, on Tuesday (April 2).

The reason: There are no uniform safety standards for the batteries of e-scooters - battery fires have already occurred in public transport in other European cities.

There are no safety standards for e-scooter batteries - accidents have already occurred in other cities

With the ban, Munich is following a recommendation from the Association of German Transport Operators (VDV).

He writes that the reason for such a recommendation is the danger posed by e-scooters: “The reason for this is the low safety standard of the built-in lithium-ion batteries and the associated increased risk of fire and explosion as well as the release of smoke gas, which is harmful to health.” Why? The first time the association even dealt with the issue were incidents of fires and explosions involving e-scooters on public transport in London, Barcelona and Madrid.

The ban does not include the transport of electric wheelchairs, pedelecs and four-wheeled electric vehicles

The MVG explains that there are corresponding safety standards for electric wheelchairs, e-bikes or pedelecs and four-wheeled electric vehicles, which are also known as e-scooters.

Therefore, these vehicles are exempt from the recommendation if they meet the standards.

The MVG provides information about the new regulation in its advertisements, on passenger TV and through notices, among other things.
