Around five in the morning this Friday, March 22, Shakira released her 12th studio album, almost seven years after

El Dorado

, with 17 long-awaited songs (10 of them new; actually eight, plus two versions).

The expectation comes not only from the musical issue, as she is an artist who has undergone enormous evolution throughout her career, but from her personal one.

In the last couple of years, the Colombian artist has experienced a personal revolution: she has separated from Gerard Piqué after a decade, after he began a relationship with another woman 22 years younger than her.

In addition, Shakira has left Barcelona with her two children, Sasha and Milan, to settle in Miami (Florida).

He has expressed all of this in a cathartic way through some of his tremendously personal songs, especially in the famous

Session 53,

which he released with Bizarrap in January 2023 and in which he revealed his (bad) relationship with the former soccer player. Catalan.

“I lost my love halfway, how did you get tired of something so genuine?

Don't try to convince me, I'm asking you, it's already decided, we have what we've learned," Shakira sings, to continue: "You wanted to go out and I would stay with you at home, you would take on the world and I just wanted to have you.

Not even your friends and mine combined, it was easier to mix water and oil.

You say that it made you feel that nothing was ever enough for me and that for me everything was little, insufficient.

So you left and left me a place here in my bed.”

But these are not the references of the old

Session 53.

The allusions

They are not for him, nor for his children, they are for a new Shakira who is fun, light, who looks to the future, collaborates with friends and tries out new sounds and letters.

If there is a song in which you can sense Piqué and his past life, it would be in the last of the new ones, precisely titled

Última

.

Women Don't Cry

is a look forward.

Shakira starts with Cardi B in

Puntería

, a summery, poppy song, where she borders on the most risqué lyrics of, probably, her entire career: “Your biceps make me crazy, I never address you, you always come straight to me G point".

And another collaboration is the second song,

La Fuerte

, in which she repeats with Bizarrap and which, therefore, is one of the most anticipated songs on this new album.

The Colombian artist distributes phrases like “I would lie to you if I said that seeing my photos with you doesn't hurt me” or “I deleted your number, so

what

?

If I already know, I won't forget you no matter how apparent it is."

But no, the tone, the form, the music... do not seem directed at her ex-partner at all, but rather very far away from him, turning the page.

The same thing happens with collaborations like Rauw Alejandro's, the fourth track,

Cohete

, a classic confrontational duo that is more poppy than Latin.

Baby

, I just long to be with you, to love each other in some corner and eat each other without any complications, there is no greater pleasure than touching you, no one like you makes me flow.

"I don't want the Moon, or go to Mars, I just want to make you come for me."

In the fifth, the unions continue, now with the Texan regional Mexican band Grupo Frontera, called

(Entre Paréntesis),

another of the singer's most personal songs: “It shows when you want it, but when you don't, it shows more.

You no longer need to show if you put the ending in parentheses.

"This doesn't matter anymore."

When the group introduces her at the end of the song, they call her “the wolf, Shakira,” and she closes with her classic howl.

The same thing happens with her songs alone, as in

Tiempo sin verte —

“Tell me if I perhaps committed some clumsiness, you, who are a man of certain delicacy and never took my complaints well and I demanded a little more than necessary” — and in

How , Where and When

, the one that most reminds us of the old and long-awaited Shakira.

In it she talks about how time “flies by when you have a good time,” and that “what matters is who you are with”: “There is no one honest left, only the drunks in the bars.

I already saw that the past is a zero to the left, it is only the future that is remembered, I removed what was weighing me down and I already feel strong.”

Nassau

is a light song to a new love with which to get lost “on an island without a signal”: “I'm afraid of another disappointment, I don't want to get hurt, but you've already opened your heart to me.”

Lyrics along the lines of those that the Colombian has been singing for more than 30 years, but with an eye towards the future.

Shakira has had eight songs to make it very clear: women no longer cry.
