The Holzkirchner market square should become more pedestrian and bicycle friendly.

The local council has now discussed the traffic routing up to the intersection with Tegernseer Straße.

Holzkirchen

– There should be a better quality of life for pedestrians and cyclists on the market square.

The Holzkirchen local council has set itself this goal with the redesign of the town center.

As reported, the committee decided at the end of 2022 to extend its scope to the intersection of Tölzerstrasse and Tegernseer Strasse in order to redesign the market square.

At the most recent meeting, the contracted engineering firm Trummer presented alternative plans for traffic routing.

Local council discusses proposals

The proposal for a roundabout was rejected by the Rosenheim State Building Authority as the responsible authority due to its width, explained engineer Tobias Bachmaier.

He therefore suggested moving the right of way from the B13 federal highway to Tegernseer Straße because there was more traffic on this.

Bicycle protection lanes could also be set up.

The proposals also stipulate that the right-turn lane on Tegernseer Straße and the bus bays on the market square will be eliminated in favor of the bicycle lane.

Buses would then stop on the street, explained Mayor Christoph Schmid (CSU).

The costs for all variants amount to around two million euros.

Another idea came from the administration: They had submitted a proposal to build a crossing aid for a barrier-free crossing.

No improvement in the situation through traffic changes

A traffic report came to the conclusion that adjustments in this area alone “will not lead to an improved situation,” explained Bachmaier.

The traffic light on Tölzer Straße and the traffic light on Oskar-von-Miller Platz would also have to be included.

The committee also missed an improved situation.

“We run the risk of delaying the marketplace change if we link it to transport measures,” feared Robert Wiechmann (Greens).

Schmid considered the proposed bicycle protection lanes in the intersection area to be too short and therefore too dangerous.

Albert Kraml (CSU) and Birgit Eibl (FWG) were criticized for eliminating the bus stops.

“It is dangerous for our school children when the bus stops on the street,” complained Eibl.

Local council votes for crossing island

Simon Ammer (SPD) noted that due to the budget situation, only the administration's proposal could be implemented.

“We don’t have the two million euros.” Sebastian Franz (CSU) finally got to the heart of the discussion: “I don’t see any significant improvement.” Only a crossing aid would do justice to the actual movement of people.

Schmid was able to draw a positive conclusion from the discussion: “We now know that this is not the worst thing we have here.” The committee ultimately unanimously agreed on the administration’s proposal to build a crossing island in the market square area.

When asked, Schmid was unable to comment on the costs.

The crossing aid will be included as a condition in the tender for the redesign of the market square, he explained.

The committee wants to keep an eye on the proposal to change the right of way at the intersection.
