Switzerland: two skiers killed in an avalanche

Highlights: Two cross-country skiers died in an avalanche near the Klosters resort in southeastern Switzerland on Friday. 12 people had lost their lives in avalanches in Switzerland since October 1, 2023. In total, 142 avalanche-related accidents occurred and 188 people were swept away. Earlier this month, six skiers disappeared in a storm near the luxury resort of Zermatt in the south of the country. The group of skiers, aged 21 to 58, included five members of the same family.

Two cross-country skiers died in an avalanche near the Klosters resort in southeastern Switzerland on Friday, local police announced on Saturday.

“They took a track with a very steep slope

,” said the police.

“Several avalanches were triggered and the two men slid down the rocky terrain over a distance of approximately 200 meters

,” according to the same source.

“A 54-year-old man and his 57-year-old companion, both living in the canton of Bern, were fatally injured

Before this accident, 12 people had lost their lives in avalanches in Switzerland since October 1, 2023, according to statistics from the WSL Institute for the Study of Snow and Avalanches.

In total, 142 avalanche-related accidents occurred and 188 people were swept away.

Earlier this month, six cross-country skiers disappeared in a storm near the luxury resort of Zermatt in the south of the country.

The group of skiers, aged 21 to 58, included five members of the same family.

Only five bodies were found.
