The city bus in Penzberg is threatened with a deficit that is twice as high as in previous years.

According to the city, the reasons for this include increased fuel and personnel costs.

One still hopes that it won't be so hard.

In response, the city council has now increased the prices for bus tickets on the recommendation of the administration.

Penzberg – “The costs are running away from us,” said the Penzberg public order office manager Joachim Bodendieck this week at the city council meeting about the city bus.

Therefore, there is no way around increasing the fares on April 1st (see box below for new prices).

The tariff last increased in 2012.

Bodendieck fears that the deficit will rise to 795,000 euros in 2024.

According to him, that would be more than twice as much as in 2021, when it was around 340,000 euros.

For 2023 - the RVO's billing is not yet available - Bodendieck mentioned a possible shortfall of 460,000 euros, although he expects it to be more.

“This is a nightmare”

The head of the public order office explained in his submission that the income from fares and other compensation payments were not taken into account - during the free city bus debate three years ago it was said that it would be around 200,000 euros.

However, this does not change the significant jump upwards.

“This is a nightmare,” admitted Elke Zehetner (SPD).

“It’s the same for all of us,” added Maria Probst (CSU).

Higher costs for drivers and operations

Regarding the reasons for the sharp increase, Bodendieck explained that the costs for drivers and operations had increased significantly.

In addition, there was the introduction of the nine-euro ticket and the Germany ticket, which would have resulted in changes to the financing of the system.

The RVO has recently requested an increase in the city's contribution, especially for line 3, which has existed since September 2020, for which, unlike the other lines, there is a special price adjustment clause in the contract.

No forecast as to how much money this will bring

Bodendieck gave no forecast as to how much money the proposed fare increase could bring in.

This depends on too many factors, he said, for example the number of passengers and the further consequences of the Deutschlandticket.

You will only see this with the next billing.

The increase is just a “tired drop,” said Zehetner.

“It feels like it doesn’t help at all.” At the same time, she recalled earlier discussions about cost reductions and the introduction of an on-call bus.

Maria Probst explained that her group agreed with the higher fares, but that the high deficit would have to be addressed in the medium term.

Follow by joining MVV and Germany ticket

Aleksandar Trifunovic (CSU) called for transparency about how joining the MVV and the Deutschlandticket affect city bus revenue, i.e. whether money flows to Penzberg via a levy.

Mayor Stefan Korpan (CSU) explained that joining the MVV is an advantage because the MVV has greater weight when it comes to the settlement of the Deutschlandticket in negotiations with the federal government.

In the end, the city council unanimously voted for the new fares for April 1st.

At the same time, at the suggestion of Jack Eberl (FLP), the ten percent discount on ticket sales in the citizens' office will be abolished (with Ute Frohwein-Sendl, PM, voting against).

It was once introduced to reduce time-consuming purchases of tickets directly from the bus driver.

The free city bus for students, which has existed since 2019, was not discussed at the meeting.

At the suggestion of Markus Bocksberger (PM), an RVO representative is also invited to the city council to explain the high deficit figures.
