The changes in international relations are subjecting the rules-based world order to complete involution

The tone of international relations has changed.

There is more confrontation, more strategic competition and more fear.

In all poles of power we are seeing pure involution.

If we look at Russia, Putinism will last there at least until 2030. The Russian president has armored himself with a tailored Constitution and a devastated political board, without opposition.

Putin defends the “strength of traditional values” and has pledged to continue the war in Ukraine.

He boasts of not paying attention to United Nations resolutions.

This Kremlin wants to subvert the rules-based international order, the consensus that was established after World War II.

China is along the same lines, although it is not exercising brute force.

Like Putin, Xi Jinping prefers a multipolar world in which it is not the United States that sets the pace, but rather each civilization—as China and Russia consider themselves—sets its own rules.

That is why he has been trying for years to water down international standards on human rights, transparency and State responsibility.

He plans to go backwards, but outside the West, Beijing has support that cannot be ignored.

Meanwhile, the United States has two routes open until November.

Trump's sounds like histrionic anti-globalization.

Not Biden's, but it is full of recipes from the past.

According to a member of his Administration, in this campaign the president has released a recipe book practically identical to the previous one.

It is not surprising, it is not moving, and its credibility is declining: almost 32,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza due to Israeli attacks and Washington continues to support Netanyahu.

Even so, on Thursday he presented a resolution to the UN Security Council to call for an immediate ceasefire in the Strip, after vetoing all previous ones.

Although the Israeli Government is unfazed.

For the first time in half a century, the V-Dem index, from the University of Gothenburg, has said that Israel can no longer be considered liberal democracy, but merely electoral.

The fact that there are countries rowing against multilateral agreements, violating international law and degrading institutions is not free.

And forces movements in the rest.

The European Union has made a move and is rethinking its defense strategy.

It is impressive to hear European leaders in 2024 saying that they must rearm, discussing how to finance their defense industry and, above all, outlining the narrative of an imminent danger.
