The Perchtenlauf is an attraction for tourists, says the head of the Maskeum.

The run has now been included in the federal register of “intangible cultural heritage”.

Kirchseeon – The Kirchseeoner Perchten are unique in the Ebersberg district.

Not just with their runs from December to January across the market town.

They are famous beyond their own borders and - because of their scary appearance - also notorious.

Perchtenlauf is an intangible cultural heritage: an attraction for tourists

Tourists from all over the world also plan the spectacle of the fascinating masks during their stay in Germany.

Rainer Eglseder, the head of the Maskeum, speaks about a New Yorker at a press conference.

This had a very special occasion: On March 13th, the “Kirchseeoner Perchtenlauf” was added to the nationwide register as an “intangible cultural heritage”.

There won't be any glamour, glitter or Hollywood like there was at the "Oscars" a few days earlier, but it's definitely worth a comparison on a regional level.

They are awards for special achievements in the field of culture.

This increases awareness, but also strengthens self-confidence and underlines the meaning of all previous efforts.

Robert Niedergesäß, who, like Mayor Jan Paeplow, had come to the Perchten mother house, the “Maskeum”, virtually overnight for the official announcement, spoke visibly with enthusiasm about an “accolade at the federal level”.

Worth mentioning in that the “Kirchseeoner Perchtenlauf” had already made it into the Bavarian State Directory for Intangible Cultural Heritage two years earlier.

What do you have to do for it?

Typical German detail and precision work when filling out countless forms, highlighting what is special, making it “palatable” to the jury what the respective cultural contribution has to offer.

A particular challenge in the case of Perchten was that there were efforts and suggestions from outside to join forces with other clubs in order to helpfully increase the potential.

The next destination?

“The Champions League”

But Eglseder and his colleagues remained stubborn, insisting on what they had grown up: not Perchten per se, but explicitly the Perchtenlauf, which, contrary to lay perception, is supposed to frighten people because of the often gruesome faces.

Rather, it brings happiness and blessing into the houses and to the people who greet the Perchten on their run.

Next goal?

“The Champions Legaue,” joked Niedergesäß.

After all, Kirchseeon's Perchten emerged as the winner of the six Bavarian applications.

And in the Ebersberg district they are now all alone with this second award.

Very important from Eglseder’s point of view: “Everyone who loves the Perchten deserves this award.”
