Munich - Almost one in five pensioners in Germany is at risk of poverty: According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office, around 18.3 percent of people aged 65 and over were at risk in 2021.

Especially in expensive Munich, many older people hardly have any money left over to pay rent and other necessary costs.

The Munich cultural area therefore launched an aid campaign shortly before Easter: It would like to fulfill the wish of seniors with a small pension.

Campaign in Munich for seniors with little money at Easter

“Whether a visit to the theater, zoo or cinema”, according to the association, the wishes of those affected are very different.

On his website he has shown colorful Easter eggs, each of which represents a wish from a senior citizen from the Old Town and Isarvorstadt retirement and service centers.

If you click on them, you will find out a personal story about each egg.

One of the seniors who can enjoy the cultural space through the campaign is Ute Kuhn.

The 80-year-old lives in a social apartment in Milbertshofen - with a pension that is below the poverty line.

“You have to look everywhere to see where you can save,” is how she describes life on a low income in Munich.

She used to often go to the opera and the theater, but today that would “exceed her budget”.

Donations from the cultural space are the only way for them to attend such events from time to time.

Because Kuhn is a trained graphic designer and art therapist herself, she wanted an annual ticket to the Lenbachhaus.

“I love the blue riders very much.

But I’m also always interested in the new exhibitions.”

The association wraps gifts and gives them to seniors

Other wishes from seniors are shown on the cultural space's website: 79-year-old Carmen, for example, would like to go to the German Theater with her daughter.

The 77-year-old Miriam would like tickets to Hellabrunn Zoo for herself and her granddaughter.

The suggested donation amounts are between 15 euros and 60 euros, although higher amounts are of course also possible.

From an amount of 300 euros, the cultural area issues a donation receipt.

You can take part in the “KulturWunschNest” campaign until April 1st. Donations can be made online via PayPal, credit card, direct debit or bank transfer.

The club then takes care of packaging the tickets “lovingly” and distributes them to the seniors who received the gift after Easter.
