Invisible, their pipes are buried.
They are only fondly remembered by local residents during extension or maintenance work.
The installations which supply them with heat are, for some, more visible.
Others blend into the landscape, like in Marseille, where Engie uses the sea to heat or cool entire neighborhoods.
Condominiums and tertiary buildings, schools, shopping centers, offices, are the first to be targeted.
There are a few cases of individual houses connected, but this is very marginal.
The sector is driven by a dual desire.
On the one hand, the government wants to expand the number from 900 to at least 1,400 networks by 2030. On the other hand, their managers are actively working to reduce their carbon footprint.
