In September 2023, a delegation of mountain rifle companies led by State Governor Martin Haberfellner (5th from right) signed the founding document with Prime Minister Markus Söder (centre).

Because of the hailstorm, the appointment did not take place in the Benediktbeuern monastery, but in the state chancellery.

Söder handed over the entrance sign to the facility.

Work is currently underway in the Benediktbeuern monastery to establish the “Bavarian Mountain Riflemen Center”.

The archive is scheduled to be inaugurated in 2025.

Benediktbeuern – These rooms were also damaged by the hailstorm last August.

Nevertheless: State Governor Martin Haberfellner is optimistic that the opening will take place in 2025.

500 square meters are available to the mountain riflemen in the monastery.

These are rooms that were formerly available to the Philosophical-Theological University (PTH).

“About 200 square meters will be purely archive area,” explains Haberfellner.

The other area can be used “multifunctionally”.

They want to exhibit special items from the archive there, for example various flags.

Events could also be held there.

People often talk about a “museum,” says Haberfellner, but he doesn’t want to bring this term to the fore.

On the one hand, research work is being carried out there, but on the other hand, a lot of things are “still in development,” says Kochler.

Research work is ongoing

Speaking of research, this has already begun.

Since September 1st, Dr.

Julia Mattern responsible.

She is part of the team of Professor Ferdinand Kramer, holder of the Chair of Bavarian History at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.

Here the new center and the work for the archive are scientifically supported.

Because everyone had to improvise after the hailstorm, Mattern temporarily has an office in the Benediktbeuren town hall, reports Haberfellner.

She is in contact with the 47 companies and obtains material from them.

The goal is to build an archive and record everything digitally.

That's a big challenge, says Kochler.

Despite their long history, the mountain riflemen have not had their own office or archive to store files, photos, sound and film recordings.

This also applies to important items, such as flags.

Most of the time you had it privately at home and then passed it on when you changed.

800,000 euros from the Free State

Haberfellner is grateful that this will now be the case in the Benediktbeuern monastery.

Last September, a delegation from the mountain rifle companies signed the founding document with Prime Minister Markus Söder in the State Chancellery in Munich (we reported).

The Free State supports the documentation center with 800,000 euros.

The damage caused by the hailstorm is currently being repaired in the rooms; then, among other things, the floor will be laid, the electrics will be installed and whitewashed.

“We lost about six months of time due to the storm,” says Haberfellner.

The equipment will be completed next year.

“Of course it still depends on how we can get the craftsman’s services,” says the state governor.

But he is confident that the center can be inaugurated in 2025.
