Munich Airport is the only one in Germany that was able to achieve growth in freight traffic last year.
Airport - The increase is 6.6 percent, 284,000 tons of freight were handled within a year, reports the airport company FMG, citing data from the Association of German Airports (ADV).
According to FMG, airports nationwide suffered a decline of 7.1 percent.
According to a spokesman, a significant share of this is made up of additional cargo, i.e. goods that are transported in the cargo hold of passenger aircraft.
In Munich, this share even rose by 11 percent.
“The direct connections to China, which have been offered again since the middle of last year, the new route to Bangalore in southern India and the route to Taipei, which is flown four times a week, have also been extremely well received, especially by the strong Bavarian export industry,” the airport said in a statement.
At FMG, it is assumed that growth will continue; 2024 has certainly started promisingly: January exceeded the previous year's monthly result by another 6.5 percent, in February it was 10.8 percent. This, according to the spokesman, is already 90 percent the pre-Corona level has been reached again.
In addition, the supply of freight capacity will increase in 2024 - thanks to new routes to Seattle, Johannesburg and Vietnam as well as higher frequencies to Beijing and Osaka, among others
