Finding a parking space in the city can be a test of patience.

Gelsenkirchen now has a solution that is unique in Germany.

Gelsenkirchen – Looking for a parking space in the city can be tiring.

It is not uncommon for drivers to have to make several laps through the streets.

Then there is the competition.

This means that a gap that you have only just discovered is suddenly closed.

The tiresome search not only costs nerves, but also puts a strain on the environment, as the city of Gelsenkirchen (NRW) also emphasizes.

That's why there is now a special system there that shows free parking spaces.

Gelsenkirchen uses a unique system to make finding a parking space easier

When it comes to parking, a lot is happening in Gelsenkirchen.

It wasn't until 2023 that a project was launched there that would enable parking without a parking permit.

And in Advent of the same year, parking fees were even given away to visitors in Gelsenkirchen.

“Parking in Buer” is now the name of the new function that is intended to help users of the Gelsenkirchen city app find a parking space.

The program shows which of the approximately 2,000 parking spaces in the district are currently occupied.

And that's not all: users of the app can choose a parking space and are then navigated there.

If the space has been occupied by another car in the meantime, the driver will automatically be directed to the next available parking space.

The “Intelligent Parking – Parking System 2.0” project is funded by the federal government and is a measure of the so-called Green City Plan of the city of Gelsenkirchen.

This is supposed to ensure that the air in the city is kept clean.

While drivers search for a parking space for a long time and with great effort, they emit unnecessary pollutant emissions.

The project is intended to reduce these.

As the city reports, this will reduce fine dust and nitrogen dioxide pollution in the long term.

Parking system in Gelsenkirchen-Buer is unique in Germany

In the first phase, more than 300 sensors were installed in Gelsenkirchen-Buer to check whether the parking spaces are occupied or free.

According to information from the city, the project is currently the largest such parking guidance system for public streets in use in terms of the number of parking spaces.

“For the first time, the availability of parking spaces for almost an entire district is recorded,” reports the city.

How does “Parking in Buer” work?

► “Parking in Buer” is a new function of the Gelsenkirchen city app that provides information about the city.

► The parking system shows which of the 2,000 parking spaces in the Buer district are currently occupied or free.

► Users can select a parking space.

The system then directs you there.

► If the parking space is occupied by another car in the meantime, the parking system then automatically navigates the driver to the next free parking space.

► “Parking in Buer” also shows parking spaces for the severely disabled and those with electric charging stations.

The 2,000 parking spaces recorded also include the parking facilities operated by the municipal transport company.

These are specifically the parking lots Turmstrasse, Breddestrasse, Urnenfeldstrasse and Gustav-Bär-Platz/Beckeradstrasse.

In addition, the app also marks designated parking spaces for the severely disabled and charging stations for electric cars.

And: In the future, the system could also be used in other parts of Gelsenkirchen, reports the city.

For the city administration, the project provides “valuable information about the use of public parking space, which is helpful for further traffic planning considerations,” according to a statement.

How the parking spaces are used has been noted since the system was launched.

Using this data, the city wants to check “in what form an expansion of the system to other areas of Gelsenkirchen makes sense.”
