Both Russia and China vetoed the UN Security Council.

Update from March 22nd, 2 p.m.:

Voting on the UN resolution that is intended to bring about a ceasefire in the war in Israel will begin shortly.

The US Secretary of State is not in New York, but in Israel.

It is Anthony Blinken's sixth visit since the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7th, which triggered the war in Israel.

According to the White House, Blinken will meet with several representatives of the Israeli government and will explore the possibilities of an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Update from March 22nd, 12:23 p.m.:

Following today's meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, talks between the USA and Israel will take place next week in Washington DC.

Several ministers from Benjamin Netanyahu's government are traveling to the US capital to speak with Biden administration officials about the situation in Rafah.

Update from March 22nd, 11:30 a.m.:

The federal government should phase out its payments to the controversial Palestinian aid organization UNRWA.

This was demanded by the President of the German-Israeli Society, Volker Beck, according to a report by the

KNA

.

Germany should leave the organization of future support to the host states and other UN agencies that are better suited to this.

In addition, the federal government must be guided by the decisions of the US Congress, which announced that it would suspend payments to UNRWA in 2024 and 2025.

The aid organization has recently come under criticism because Israel has accused members of taking part in the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th.

UN and Israel are negotiating a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip

First report:

Tel Aviv / New York – The United Nations Security Council will meet this Friday because of the war in Israel.

According to information from New York, a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is to be voted on.

The draft resolution was introduced by the USA, which is considered Israel's closest ally in the war against Hamas.

The first discussions are scheduled to take place around 9:00 a.m. local time (2:00 p.m. CET).

If the resolution on the Israel War is adopted by the UN Security Council, it would be the first time since the start of the Israel War in early October that the most powerful body in the United Nations has spoken out in favor of a continued ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

USA brings resolution on Israel war to UN Security Council

So far, three similar resolutions have failed because of the US veto.

But given the increasing number of civilian casualties and the threat of famine in other parts of the Gaza Strip, pressure is also increasing on the government of US President Joe Biden in Washington DC to facilitate a ceasefire.

This should then be used to ensure supplies for the civilian population again.

It is not certain whether the fourth resolution of its kind will lead to a ceasefire in the war in Israel.

The veto power Russia had recently expressed criticism of the text, among other things because, according to President Vladimir Putin's government, it did not call for a ceasefire clearly enough.

According to information from the dpa news agency, the draft clearly places emphasis on the “need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire to protect the civilian population on all sides and to enable the provision of crucial humanitarian aid and to alleviate human suffering.”

The resolution is also intended to prevent the “systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure” in the Gaza Strip.

UN resolution on the war in Israel: These are the member states of the World Security Council

For a resolution to be considered adopted by the United Nations Security Council, it requires the consent of at least 9 of the 15 member states.

These are currently:

  • USA

  • Russia

  • China

  • France

  • Great Britain

  • Switzerland

  • Ecuador

  • Japan

  • Malta

  • Mozambique

  • Algeria

  • Guyana

  • Sierra Leone

  • Slovenia

  • South Kora

  • Combat in the war in Israel was reported on several fronts

In addition to the necessary majority, none of the five permanent members (USA, Russia, China, France and Great Britain) are allowed to exercise a veto.

Security Council resolutions are binding under international law.

If an affected state ignores them, the body can impose sanctions.

It remains unclear whether the government of Israel under Prime Minister Benhamin Netanyahu would feel bound by a resolution.

Meanwhile, fighting between fighters from the radical Islamist Hamas and the Israeli army is reported on several fronts.

Israeli units are said to have come under fire while searching for terrorists in the West Bank, reports the

    Times of Israel

    news portal .

    The Jerusalem Post

    newspaper,

in turn, reports rocket fire from the Gaza Strip on several Israeli cities.

However, Israel's air defense was able to intercept the rockets.
