Too few staff, too little money: many consider the childcare options to be inadequate.

Finance Minister Lindner now takes a stand on ARD.

Berlin – Does the traffic light coalition want to further expand childcare soon?

In any case, Finance Minister Christian Lindner did not rule this out in the “Report from Berlin”.

“We haven’t finally decided on that yet,” said the FDP politician in response to a question on the

ARD

program on Sunday evening.

“By the way, child care is not a federal responsibility, but rather a responsibility of the states and municipalities.

“The federal government has only made a supplementary contribution here in recent years,” added Lindner.

Last week, the federal government announced that it did not want to launch any further investment programs to expand daycare places for the time being.

The reason is the current budget situation.

When asked by journalist Tina Hassel, Lindner maintained that no preliminary decisions had been made for individual cuts in the beginning budget negotiations: "That would have to be what colleague Paus would have to say, in any case we don't have a budget for 2025 yet."

“Expansion of childcare is not a social benefit”

Last month, Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) emphasized the importance of women's employment for economic development.

Economic equality between women and men is “a declared goal of the federal government,” she said, referring to the annual economic report from Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens).

Paus' ministry had evaluated Habeck's annual economic report with regard to the role of women in the labor market.

The report shows that “the employment rate of women with children is one of the highest in Europe,” but 47.2 percent of women with children work part-time, said Paus.

DIHK: “Childcare is not a social benefit, but an investment”

But women often want to work more than they can, emphasized Paus.

“This also has consequences when it comes to making a living through your own income, not only currently, but also when life circumstances change such as separation or divorce,” said Paus.

In order to change that, well-developed childcare is crucial.

In 2023, Paus was in a power struggle with Lindner, the reason being the dispute over basic child welfare.

The Green Party Minister Lindner also blocked the issue of the Growth Opportunities Act.

Paus also accused the FDP of ignoring the issue of child poverty: “Everyone thinks they are getting short shrift.”

DIHK Managing Director Achim Dercks criticized in the current “Report from Berlin” that the expansion of childcare was “not a social benefit, but an investment in the infrastructure so that employment is possible for parents”.
