Highlights: Cancer cases among young women are increasing - Munich's chief doctor explains the problem after Kate's video. After breast cancer and thyroid cancer, early-stage colorectal cancer was the most commonly diagnosed. In Germany, colon cancer is also increasing rapidly, especially in patients between 30 and 50 years of age. In Germany there is a significant increase in cancer among young people, especially women.

Munich's chief physician Franz Bader calls for more extensive prevention.

Munich - The news spread worldwide and also caused consternation here: Princess Kate, 42 years old, suffers from cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

The mother of three children did not make her exact diagnosis public, but it represents an alarming trend: more and more young women are developing cancer.

This is proven by various scientific studies, including a large study with data from the American Cancer Institute.

In this study, US scientists analyzed more than half a million cases of cancer in patients under the age of 50 from 2010 to 2019. They found that cancer is increasingly affecting younger adults, with young women particularly affected by this increase.

In the US study, the increase was 4.35 percent over the almost ten-year study period.

After breast cancer and thyroid cancer, early-stage colorectal cancer was the most commonly diagnosed.

Cancer is increasingly affecting younger people in Germany

Professor Franz G. Bader, colon cancer specialist and head of surgery at Munich's Isar Clinic, confirmed in an interview with the Münchner Merkur/tz media group: "In Germany, colon cancer is also increasing rapidly, especially in patients between 30 and 50 years of age."

He therefore calls for a consistent expansion of preventive colonoscopies, including for younger patients.

The German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) supports this demand: “For people with colon cancer in their family, regular preventative care from the age of 30 would be life-saving in many cases.”

According to a report by Deutsche Welle (DW), the rise in cancer among younger people is not limited to the United States.

A study of cancer registries in 44 countries showed that the incidence of early-stage cancers is increasing sharply in 14 types of cancer, mainly affecting the digestive system.

“The fact that cancer is being diagnosed more and more frequently – even in younger adults in their thirties – is mainly due to the fact that early detection tests have now become much more precise and because more and earlier tests are being carried out,” says the DW report.

Cervical cancer and ovarian cancer in young women are increasing

In addition to colon cancer, young women are also increasingly affected by cervical cancer and ovarian cancer.

“Cervical cancer is most often caused by human papilloma viruses (HPV),” explains Bader.

These viruses are transmitted through direct skin and mucous membrane contact; there is a high risk of infection, particularly during sexual intercourse.

Although many of the over 200 different types of HPV are harmless, some of these viruses can cause various types of cancer.

A vaccination is now available for children between the ages of nine and 15.
