If no big leaps are possible, the Waakirchen Village Center Working Group wants to at least take small steps.

This was the result of a tour with city planner Vera Winzinger.

Waakirchen

– The timing was well chosen.

Just as city planner Vera Winzinger set off with the village center working group to talk about the future design of the Waakirchner town center, the St. Martin Church, illuminated from all sides, shone in the evening twilight.

Whether the group was standing at the rather murky Hupper Lack village pond, on the damp meadow near the future town hall or hiking through the steep streets in the village center: the sublimely glowing onion dome of St. Martin dominated the picture from every angle.

A celebration for the architect.

“Urban planning means establishing qualities,” said the expert, who saw many qualities as she toured the winding town center: decorative facades, historic courtyards, a lot of growth.

Working group pushes for implementation

So far, the working group has primarily dealt with the part of the Waakirchner center that has remained a green meadow over the centuries.

The large area between the - rather run-down - Bäckervoitl property and the district savings bank building, which the municipality bought in order to expand it into the new administrative headquarters.

There has been talk for many years, but under the chairmanship of Balthasar Brandhofer, a village center working group founded in June 2022 has drawn up a plan after a citizen survey.

The model made by Resi Obermüller envisages the construction of a community center.

The working group recommends demolishing the Bäckervoitl property.

He would have expected that the municipality would quickly move towards implementation after presenting the model at the beginning of 2023.

But so far it is not even clear what funding options are available.

Brandhofer and most recently local councilors criticized this heavily.

“The community must finally get going”

The town planner Winzinger, who was hired by the community, presented her ideas for the first time in the parish hall at the beginning of February, independent of the working group.

He didn't feel like he was being taken seriously, but arranged a meeting with the planner, which now took place.

After the joint tour and the debriefing in the pizzeria, the mood in the working group improved.

“It was a great conversation,” says Brandhofer.

Conclusion: In order to finally make progress, even small steps would be helpful.

Put up benches, maybe even partially demolish the Bäckervoitl.

The village pond should be included, and future traffic routing is also a big issue.

Together with the city planner, Brandhofer now wants to talk to Mayor Norbert Kerkel.

The aim is to discuss the suggestions and explore funding opportunities.

Brandhofer will not let up: “The community must finally get going.”
