IG Metall Weilheim has had turbulent years: an unexpected change in leadership, Corona, insolvent companies and the fear of the branch closing were the dominant topics of the past four years.

Now things have calmed down again and a new boss has been elected.

Oberhausen/district - After decades at IG Metall - interrupted only by his time as mayor of Wessobrunn - Helmut Dinter will retire on May 1st as the first authorized representative of the IG Metall administration office in Weilheim.

His successor was elected at the IG Metall delegates' meeting on Thursday in the “Stroblwirt” inn in Oberhausen: Karl Musiol, previously the second authorized representative, was elected Dinter's successor with 100 percent of the votes.

Musiol (40) comes from the Ruhr area and joined IG Metall in 2017

Musiol (40) comes from the Ruhr area and came to IG Metall in 2017, working first in Ingolstadt, then in Erlangen, before moving to Weilheim in 2022.

He lives with his family in Peißenberg.

There, as second authorized representative, he had the last two years to learn the ropes as Dinter's successor.

The new second authorized representative is Thomas Schweiger: He also received all the votes of the 40 delegates.

In contrast to Musiol, he will work on a voluntary basis again.

In his review, Dinter discussed the impending closure of the office: After the departure in July 2020 of the newly elected first representative Daniela Fischer to the collective bargaining commission in Munich, consideration was given to closing the office in Weilheim.

But thanks to the efforts of the local board, these plans were abandoned.

The IG Metall administrative office, the last remaining union in the district town, will definitely exist until 2036, said Dinter.

Because many companies closed, these members also disappeared

The HAP in Penzberg, SWL in Bad Tölz, “Schunk” in Huglfing, MTP and “Seccua” in Weilheim and DBI in Schongau have all been closed in recent years.

These closures were also associated with a loss of members, but overall IG Metall continued to improve: after more than a decade of membership decline, in 2024, for the first time, more people joined IG Metall than left.

The IG Metall return team, which calls members who want to leave and tries to convince them to stay in the union, is also partly responsible for this, says Musiol.

Thanks to the commitment of Birgit Hammer, Manfred Unger and Marion Jauch, around 80 members remain loyal to IG Metall every year.

Works councils were founded in various companies

Works councils have also been founded in various companies over the past four years, including at “Stöger Automation GmbH” in Königsdorf and at EIZO in Geretsried.

This didn't always work without complications: According to Karl Musiol, this resulted in massive conflicts with the management at "Stöger", which put the works council under pressure and harassed them.

IG Metall will continue to support those affected.

Several legal proceedings have been brought against the company by IG Metall, as well as against those responsible at the former Schongauer stocking factory, now DBI.

Operations have wound down, but there is still hope for some employees.

Since 2020, IG Metall has raised around 2.24 million euros for its members, as Dinter reported to the over 100 members present.

ADAC employees should be involved

In addition, IG Metall is trying to integrate ADAC employees, who work as roadside helpers nationwide, into the union.

In total, IG Metall is responsible for around 5,400 members in over 40 companies in five districts between Kaufering and Mittenwald and between Schongau and Bad Tölz.

The union will celebrate its 60th birthday in July in the Tiefstollenhalle in Peißenberg.
