Over 100 companies and investors have signed a letter, which is presented today to European environment ministers, to ask "for the adoption of an emissions reduction target of at least 90% and to put the climate at the center of the EU strategy to increase energy security, resilience and competitiveness".

This was explained by the Italian think tank for Ecco on the day of the meeting of ministers in Brussels to discuss the European Commission's proposal for a 90% emissions reduction target by 2040, compared to 1990 levels.

The letter, coordinated by the Corporate Leaders Group of Europe The University of Cambridge - Ecco reports in a note - includes companies such as Ikea, Danone, Unilever and Heineken.

Among the Italian companies there are Danieli Officine Meccaniche, Bricocenter Italia, Riva and Mariani Group.

Companies are calling for decarbonisation to be put at the center of the European energy and industrial strategy, based on a 'sustainable competitiveness' approach that would allow the EU to be at the forefront of the global race to develop a green industry.

Davide Panzeri, Europe program manager at Ecco, underlined that "this request demonstrates the importance of the Green Deal also from the perspective of European economic development and the competitive positioning of its companies".

Panzeri then added that "it is now up to politics to take charge of charting the path to decarbonisation, offering guarantees to the private sector, so that they can invest in this transformation".
