Courage is the mother virtue, said Vladimir Jankélévitch.
Conversely: virtues that do not have their roots in courage are only appearances of virtue, impostures.
We have known it since La Bruyère, Saint-Simon, Molière: society has never lacked virtuous falsehoods, lesson-givers who often end up being unmasked.
The practice of virtues always presupposes courage because all require renunciation.
To what?
With ease.
Virtue is always difficult and this difficulty has its price.
